Went with the Nikon D5200...after week of research!

The AF System isn't "new", just new for the D5200. Nikon pulled the 39point AF system and the 2016 pixel metering system from the D7000. Its in the mail, I'll test it all when it comes. But yeah, from what I've read, using the AF systems (on any camera) for video is a futile effort. If there...

Went with the Nikon D5200...after week of research!

Yeah, I've got some serious learning to do when it comes to all the compatibility of lenses. As you said the D5200 is an F Mount, so I wonder what the possibilities are. I really like the idea of buying a "bunch" of old primes...just have to learn what is compatible. The D5200 doesn't have a...

Went with the Nikon D5200...after week of research!

I posted a few days ago regarding what camera I should get with my $800.00 budget. After a week of research, I went with the D5200. I paid $775.00 on eBay that included an 18-55mm VR AF-S lens. That deal was cheaper than Amazon body only ($796), Adorama, Beach Camera and 17th St Photo. I...

$800.00 to spend on DSLR Camera for Docs

Actually now it sounds like I should be getting a 50 mm prime lens instead of an 18 – 55 zoom lens. This will allow me to play with the aperture for videos where I want to emphasize the depth of field. The only reason I would be using an 18 to 55 zoom lens is to practice the basics. Thoughts?

$800.00 to spend on DSLR Camera for Docs

Read up on both of those after your post. Sounds like the T5i is practically identical to the T4i, the reviews suggest its not worth the price increase.

$800.00 to spend on DSLR Camera for Docs

Thanks Alcove, I appreciate the concern. Audio is definetly paramount to get locked down before your on set. Everything I've read and interviews I've watched suggest that if your audio is lacking, your truly don't have $%^& for footage. Especially on DSLRs. This will be my #1 priority. I...

$800.00 to spend on DSLR Camera for Docs

I'm leaning towards the D5200. All the low light shorts I've seen have been pretty impressive. It will take some time for me to learn what I'm doing with this camera. For a first lens, with Video in mind....should I stick with the 18-55 or just buy the body only and get another lens??

$800.00 to spend on DSLR Camera for Docs

As I said in the OP, I'm going to worry about audio later on when I have my head wrapped around projects I'd like to do. I'm aware the onboard audio on DSLR needs to be replaced with a better setup. For now I want to focus on the camera/lens.

$800.00 to spend on DSLR Camera for Docs

Hello all, My GF got me a Canon Vixia HF S21 2 years ago for my birthday. Without knowing anything about photography/cinematography (still don't), I quickly learned that I wouldn't be able to get the kinds of depth of field shots that I really liked which was frustrating. I just sold it on...

What lense is she using in these interviews?

Couple answers to that. I WAS using the rode videomic. The protests were super loud. Finally, there is so much I still need to learn about this camera... I'm sure the audio settings weren't optimal. I don't have the camera handy...there are a few settings I can tweak. Not too sure how it all...

What lense is she using in these interviews?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PP-6bC9Q3RM So there is the result of what I did. Originally I was going to include a bunch of interview footage which is what drew me to the idea in the first place. After looking at all the footage I got, it was clear that the quality of the interviewees and...

What lense is she using in these interviews?

Gotcha, good info. The reason I want the shallow depth of field is because it just looks a hundred times better than if everything is in focus. It makes the audience focus on the subject instead of distracting background people and clutter. If somebody at a protest is yelling their rant, that...

What lense is she using in these interviews?

Interesting, thanks so much for the input, Im learning alot. I already bought the HF S21, I don't think selling it at this point and starting from scratch with a DSLR is possibility for me right now. I'll just roll with what I've got. My whole goal is to make a mini-documentary on the...

What lense is she using in these interviews?

Uhhh, 4 GRAND!!!??? Yeah right, don't have that kind of money. I emailed her and asked what she used...here is her reply: "Hey there, I used a 20mm Sigma and a 50mm zeiss lens. Good luck with the shoot!" Soo, I learned a bit about depth of field and the effect I'm trying to get...It sounds...
