Best affordable recording equipment?

Hi

I'm recently started a small YouTube channel and wanted to know whats the best Entry level recording equipment I can buy at an affordable price?

That's much too broad a queston, so let's try to narrow it down a little:

1) What, exactly, is it you're wanting to do? Is this mostly for seated, talking-head material? Is it dialog for narrative (short films)? Are you recording VO/narration? Different tools for different jobs, so these things matter.

2) What, exactly, is the budget you have at your disposal? "Best" and "affordable" don't usually go hand-in-hand, and entry-level can mean a lot of different things. Knowing what your end-goal is, along with how much you have to spend, will help immensely.

3) Which camera are you using? If you have a camera that has decent recording capabilities and reliable audio inputs, it may save you a little on the audio kit. So, make and model, please.

4) Are you running as a one-man-band, or do you have crew people to help you? How much experience with sound for video do you and/or your crew have?

Twenty bucks and I'll throw in a pack of blank tapes.

But yes, what AcousticAl said. :)

"Best" and "affordable" are mutually exclusive.

Here's the $1,200 buying guide. Select one from each category:

Shotgun mic kits will have the shotgun mic, boom-pole, shock-mount and simple wind protection (softie).

You'll also need cables, cases, battery packs and other miscellaneous items - about $200+.

But who is going to run the sound for you? They will know less about sound than you do; and you don't know much. (Don't be insulted, I wouldn't know an F-stop from a bus stop; and I'm married a photographer.) That's always the issue - knowledge, skill and experience. Even if you learn a lot about sound when you are on the set you won't be handling the sound responsibilities, someone else will, because you can't direct, DP and do production sound all at the same time.

Thanks for all the help but I am a newbie. Basically all I need is a mic to record sound if my actor is far away from the camera and that fluffy thingy which reduces wind noise. I just wanna know whats the best brands. I'm not sure what my budget is because I live in South Africa so the currency is different and the prices.

No you don't understand. He just wants a simple answer without telling you any relevant information. Can't you guys read? He said he was a newbie so stop with all the questions! :) :)

And a free download of Audacity and you are golden.

You need a good Rhodes mic, and a cat which is what sits on top of it.

I have attached pics to show my setup

Perfect sound every time except for an odd meowing noise in all of my footage ;)

Much better. All the vibration on my camera has gone, and the annoying meowing has completely dissipated from my audio. Thanks Alcove
