Who is Your Favorite Director and Why?

I have a lot of favorites but I would have to say my all-time favorite is Paul Thomas Anderson. I have never been disappointed in anything he's made and his writing is always freaking genius. He also always gets great performances out of actors who you thought sucked and then of course when they make their next movie they do suck lol. Boogie Nights would prob be his masterpiece but I really enjoy everything he makes.

What about u guys?

Spielberg!!!
You can say he's a commercial genius, because that's easy to say as he's made more money consistently than anybody else. But it seems that people dismiss his technical abilities, especially filmmakers, very easily. It's so easy. It's like bashing Tom Cruise, cause hardly anybody wants to defend him. As a wannabe storyteller, there is nobody I aspire to be more like than Spielberg. He has a unique understanding of and ability to control his audience, to a degree that I at least have not seen in another director. Whatever Spielberg does, is what I want to learn to do.

As a Godzilla fan I'm gonna have to say Ishiro Honda and Jun Fukuda, i've also never hated a Tarantino, or Kubrick film. I've probably seen The Shining a 1000 times. I'm also a huge fan of John Carpenter and George Romero's earlier works but their most recent stuff hasn't impressed me. I also love Ridley Scott.

It's a toss-up between Hitchcock and Kubrick. Directors still in action and it's Nolan, hands down - he hasn't made a bad film - but between those two, they're just not really comparable. Hitchcock's better in areas, Kubrick's better in others. They take the top spot together.

Favorite Director

Hey, the favorite director question. I always have said my favorite director is Kevin Smith, because as I was growing up one of my favorite movies was Mallrats, which then led me into the cult following of Kevin Smith Movies. I bought the 10th anniversary edition of Clerks, CLERKS X which had a lot of commentary on the making of Clerks and Kevin's story from film student to being a noticed and successful Hollywood film director.

So his story has been inspiring, and I think he is also smart and cool person, I can learn a lot from him.

I just found this fascinating and inspirational article online I'm sure you all will be interested in Checking Out.

Scorsese, I'm just in aww of the beauty of his shots, the slow motions, tracking, smokey scenes. Love it and I see something different every time I watch.

Tarantino, I'm a fan and of his film making style it's like he took the way rap beats were made in the 90's (multiple layered samples) and applied it to film making.

Spike Lee, smart and raw films and I've always admired his use of color as well. After reading his book both inspired and blown away at how determined he was to succeed.

I'm sure my list will grow I'm in the process of studying more directors both old and new.

Sofia coppola I think she's amazing and she notices things that other people over look I feel like she has stepped out of her fathers shadow and became a great directer/writer in her own right
