Need film director for a feature.

Movie will be for a blog. It will be a little over an hour in length, with only a couple actors in it. There will be dialogue throughout film, but mostly will be visual. Will be shot with a Sony VX2000.

Shoot will be for about 7 days. About 4 days on set inside, and 3 days on location outside. Because budget is tight, no pay for director. That said, your food, lodging and expenses will be taken care of. U will be put up in a hotel for the 7 days along with your meals paid for during shooting.

This could be ideal for film students, the up and coming filmmaker, or someone sick of grip work with no chance of advancement for shooting their own feature.

Someone that knows about lighting scenes is a must. Computer literate prefered. There will be lots of dolly shots. Someone thats done videography work with extreme sports is a plus, as there will be scenes with skateboarding in it. Someone that can block their shots. Tricky camera angles, panning, ect.

What's the film about? Are you the producer? Writer?

" maybe you're looking for a DP? A DP/Director? Just clarifying. :)

I’d love to do this. I’ll even consider covering the travel expenses
myself. I have the same concern as justin - most of what you
mention is the job of the DP, not the job of the director. Do you
have a DP who has done videography work with extreme sports,
knows lighting and can execute tricking camera angles? Or are
you expecting the director to handle the camera and lighting?

What about the rest of the crew? What about the rest of the
equipment?
 
Yes im the producer and wrote the script. No budget to hire DP, Gaffer. The director will have to wear most of the hats for this one. :cool:

Theres only going to be 2 actors. Maybe a few extras thrown in here and there. The sets are small, as interior shots will be inside rooms in houses/apts. The rest of the exterior shots will be with the actor running around the city. Very basic, very low budget.

So looking for someone that can light these rooms and record sound on a shoestring.
 
How many pages? Script in standard format? 1min per page would be 60 pages; 60 pages for 7 days is about 9 pages / day.

That's really aggressive and you'll be hard pressed to get quality with one person directing and DPing. Do you have a camera and lights or are they required to provide this as well? If so, are you accounting for any damages that may occur to their equipment during the extreme action sports shooting?

I wrote the script but also wrote the shot list. The shot list is about 70 pages. Ofcourse when the director looks at the shot list things will be tightened up, things cut, etc.

I own the camera, Sony vx2000. I have some budget for lights and sound. The director doesnt have to bring any gear. Only their technical knowledge and energy.

Ill be editing. But prefer someone thats done post, with transfering dv to hd, color correction etc, to show me what i'll need to do once everything is edited together.
 
Even with only two people in the cast, I think 7 days for a 60-minute movie is going to be really difficult to pull off.

That being said, as far as you finding a director, I have a feeling you'd have better luck if you went to your local colleges (of which Chicago has many) and offered to pay your director. Instead of spending money on food/transportation/hotel, you can use that portion of your budget to hire a local director. College kids are usually broke and eager to get experience, and often overflowing with creative energy.

Not worried so much about getting the film completed in 7 days. Theres dialogue but very minimal.

Have to feed the crew.. And it wont be cheese sandwiches, but real meals twice a day.

Film/college students are definitely welcome to work on this film.
 
Yeah, that's good and all, but I'm suggesting that you physically go to the University of Illinois at Chicago, and just start talking to people. I'm confidient that you'd find a competent director willing to work for the amount you would've spent on hotel/transportation. :)

don’t look outside of Chicago. As I said, I would cover my travel
expenses to Chicago.

Just so I understand; you will have all the equipment and a crew.
But you want the director to be the DP and do all the audio. Is that
correct? What crew will you provide?

I see no problem shooting it in 7 days. However... You mention
sets, rooms, houses and apartments - all plural. How many interior
locations? And how many extra actors may be thrown in here and
there?

I think this would be an interesting challenge. You may be getting
so may directors applying that all my questions are just a bother
and you wouldn’t consider hiring me, but I would love a trip to
Chicago and a challenge like this.
 
Oh, I don't think he shouldn't look outside of Chicago. If he can find a director online, more power to him. My suggestion was only meant as an alternative, if his first plan doesn't work out. :)

a) no Airplane ticket
b) I would never shoot on a Sony VX2000 :)

I have the camera, the mini dv tapes for the shoot. I have a seperate mini dv camera for rendering to hardrive right after tape has been shot. I have some of the budget set aside for lights and audio. Im thinking can hire one or 2 grips but pay wont be much.

Interiors will be shot in a house preferably. But if cant get house then inside apt. So the rooms would be living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and hallway/stairway leading outside. Extras would be used only once and that would be Ext. sitting on a bench. There also could be one additional actor playing an antagonist but its so brief and in one scene.

Yes there are people replying but either they are saying "directing like this will be easy", sounds too good to be true, or "directing like this is basically impossible", i know thats not true.

Prefer someone thats local but if u want to relocate for a week to work on the film thats fine too.
 
I don't think that directing this would be too difficult. I can easily see how it would be possible to shoot a feature film in 7 days.

I just question why you, the producer, would be willing to put a lot of money into a film shot on the Sony VX2000. Honestly, it's a pretty crappy camera to be shooting on in 2012. Why not put some of your money towards camera rental? Or, look to hire a DoP who has their own camera gear.

a) the plane ticket was never going to happen. ;)
b) for the budget im working with i'd have to be insane to shoot on something other than the vx2000. One of the best cameras for capturing in low light. Can make it look hd in post afterwords anyway.

Just addressed the Sony vx2000 low light benefit in the previous post. No camera renting. Dont have budget to hire DOP and to bring all their stuff.
