Obscure underrated Horror movies for Halloween!

Do you have an obscure horror movie that you want to tell people about...ok go ahead..but try to keep spoilers down...but at least explain why you like the movie...style..actors..ect

Dead and Buried....Shot by the guys who brought you Alien...not a blood fest but has a tense and creepy feel to it. Filmed in the 80's it was shot with a really soft feel to it..almost dreamy...i like the look of the film.

Martin...Filmed by Romero (night of the living dead) a strange story that mixes legend and a bit of true life/what if it was real, story line..cant explain more..again not a blood bath but different...

Deep Red..Dairo Argento...This guy ozzes style..but its strange and verry artsy. Some say his films are a bit pretentious because of the style. I say differnt because he dosent mind getting messy in his films. Not as artsy as Susperia but the body count and strangness are well paced. Notice his close ups style..its his signature that other filmakers have stolen from him.
By the way i reconmend either the full american dubbed verision or italian only language with subs..there is another verision with added sceans with the italian cut sceans added, its anoying while they are flipping back and forth between english and italian with that specific verision.

Good picks! Martin is a favorite of mine (really, anything Romero. Also recommend the way underrated Bruiser), and Deep Red is good. Not the Argento I'd pick; I'd go with Opera or Phenomenon (also known as Creepers in the US). The latter has one of my favorite scenes in any movie, if you've seen it, the pit scene.

If I recall, you and I agreed on Tokyo Gore Police (one of my favorites from the last few years). I'd also recommend the first Hard Revenge, Milly movie; while it seems like a more typical post-apocalyptic action movie, the ending will make any horror/gore fan happy.

Not so obscure, but Legend of Hell House and Ghost Story (with Fred Astaire) usually make my October viewing. I also recently marathoned all the Hellraiser sequels, and found 5 to be surprisingly good. 3, 4 and 6 I could do without though.

I'll dig through the dvds later and come up with a few more. Does Lost Skeleton of Cadvra count? I watch that every Halloween!

Love my horror stories in both film and fiction. Could go on for hours... but won't!

When The Ninth Gate first came out, the average review ratings were very low. Even though this was a Johnny Depp/Roman Polanski 'horror' film. I loved this film. Still do. I see that the ratings have gone up over the past decade.

If you want something a bit more bloody, try The Midnight Meat Train from 2008 -- good acting and edge of your seat story.

Not for the squeamish -- Audition.

A relatively unknown film I also like a lot is The Black House (2007), even though this is a South Korean film, I liked the characters and the story was a very good ride.

A hidden pleasure of mine (says a lot about me I suppose), 1988's Spellbinder -- something about a young, seductive Kelly Preston in need of rescuing... very dated movie by today's standards -- would love to redo this story... with a bit more horror and 2011 violence/SFX...

A tad off subject ... two good books (future movies I hear) that will expand your horror horizons. The Dead Path by Australian first-time author, Stephen M. Irwin and The Passage by Justin Cronin.

Tombs of the Blind Dead......The Templars shall rise agian!!! muahahahah! lol i love this series! not overly bloody but the Templar undead look verry cool...not your typical undead movie either. Verry good example of spanish horror in the 70's just before the spanish movie industry bottom fell out. Based on spanish legend of the Templar Knights and their rise from the grave. Tombs is the strongest of the 4 but Horror of the Zombies is the weakest with verry bad spfx at the end with the ghost ship. The strange score fits perfectly with these movies.
just sit back a have fun.

cheezy american trailer...http://youtu.be/KMcbfKZSvI0

list of the serise

Tombs of the Blind Dead (La noche del terror ciego )
The Ghost Galleon aka horror of the zombies (El buque maldito)
Return of the Evil Dead (El ataque de los muertos sin ojos )
Night of the Seagulls (La Noche De Las Gaviotas)

OH and Bubba Hotep! Brilliant. Elvis and a Black JFK are in a retirement home... and they are haunted by a disco mummy. Fun cinematography and silly story... and the CHIN (Bruce Campbell)!

Dark sity

Not realy, horor. Not realy SF and not realy triller.
I Love this movie.....it was a big Flop

Pontypool - canadian low-budget apocalyptic film about a virus in the english language.
Thirst - Korean vampire romance that makes twilight look like glee.
Martyrs - French, about the torture of women but with a philisophical side (not for the faint)
Wolf Creek - brilliant australian true story
Rogue - Jaws but with a giant crocodile directed by the same guy as wolf creek.

1.) Dog Soldiers - I'm a sucker for any werewolf movie.

2.) Near Dark - One of the better vampire movies.

3.) The Exorcism of Emily Rose - To me, it's the creepiest of all the movies about exorcism.

4.) Pandorum - Great mix of sci-fi and horror.

5.) Terror Firmer - Sorry Toxie, but this is probably the best Troma film. So wrong on so many levels.

6.) Brutal Massacre - More comedy than horror. Great dialog.

7.) Slither - Not sure if this is considered underrated or not, but I think this one of the best horror-comedies ever.

Some of the best horror films ive seen this year are:

Dark City is great. Not really Halloween for me.
Love Terror Firmer.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. Recently released. Really enjoyable and one of the best all time movie titles.
Troll Hunter also good.

For whatever reason though I have to suggest this one.
Chopping Mall

The younger guys might not know it but I remember watching it on VHS as a kid along with several similar flicks for Halloween at a friend's house.

Evil Dead 2 is usually my standby but hardly obscure and underrated.

This is how i remember some of the semi independent movies back in the 80's. idk i just think how they are filmed looks better sometimes than the new stuff today in the theaters with full backing...
Ok people just dont give lists! tell us why you like the films you posted?? was it the direction, acting? concept ect..... ;)
Give us some review..were filmmakers here...i want your insights on your choices.

Cool thread. Every October I do this thing that I believe originated on the IMDB Horror boards, where you watch a horror film every day for the month of October and keep the list updated. So far, I've watched the super obscure Ghoul School (1990), The Funnyman (1994), The Hollow (2004), and Saw IV (2007).

Some of my favs that I plan to watch later this month are Clownhouse (1989), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), and Sleepaway Camp (1983). I highly recommend those three films.

Thanx!
sleepaway Camp and its sequels and the remake...all good stuff!

Horror of Dracula is one on my all time classic favs..better than the Bela Lugosi verision...The style of the sets really imerse me. This movie is like seeing an old friend from my childhood. Great sets good acting and great verision of the story.

Dracula spanish verision is almost unknown to the mainstream...unless you pay close attition to the horror genre most do not know this exists....the renfeild in this movie is actually better than the lead! ya the renfield is by far the actuall star. Shot at the same time as lugosi with the same sets but at night, it surpasses lugosi's version as well...
