anonying CL ad for free filmmaker

Normally I don't gripe about the silly free help wanted ads all over craigslist, but this one, becuase its a GOVERNMENT park, hence funded in some part by ME, I find this completely inappropriate... cmon , theres enough free gubment green money floating around, there are local filmmakers who would do this for a fair price...

Here is the ad...

We are looking for a student videographer or someone looking to improve their reel. We need help shooting a 2 to 3 minutes video for Lewis and Clark National Historical Park in Astoria. It's to show how our park is utilizing sustainable practices.

We will interview park staff about our rain garden, carbon offset sticker program, led lights, recycling program, and our south slough restoration program. It will be fast paced and wacky.

The deadline to wrap is May 19. We are looking for someone with a camera or we could rent one. It would be great a great resume builder.

For more information you can contact me directly.

Thank you for your interest.

hey, no politics on IT!
Im a hardcore conservative, and I believe that national parks are a GOOD thing and are one of the few tasks that are BEST managed by public servants. They need to MANAGE resources wisely. If this is NEEDED for the park, then the manager needs to should make the necessary allocations. Heck they dont even offer gas money!

The ad says the will rent a camera, but not pay an operator.. so will they rent a camera if it comes with an operator attached? :)

I'd rather do this free gig in a beautiful park working for serious people then ending up filming some guys in their living room pretending to smoke pot and make fart jokes.

As I will always say: If you have a job and there are good people willing to do it for free, let them.

That's capitalism ;)

I happen to know that there have been some pretty awesome movies about guys sitting in their living room, smoking pot, and making fart jokes. :D

The person who works at that park that wants the film made probably has nothing in the budget for it, so they are seeing if they can get it for free. Somebody will do it. Hell I would probably do it. Though I have no interest in Doc type work.

Damned if they do; damned if they don't.

At least they are being honest & upfront about the payrate in advance. You may not like the rate, but you won't have to waste any time calling in & being placed on hold for 30 minutes to find out there's no money.

Maybe they could "rent" your camera.

Would there be any running around with scissors and unprotected audio recording going on in those videos?

Now we're using our noggins!
No, but there was a whole bunch of PBR, and exactly 135 F-bombs.
It only hurts for a minit.
Peanut Butter... whut?
and...
"Oh! My virgin ears!" (feigns fainting)

EDIT: Yeah, what CF said. I apologize, Mr Scott.
I won't do this again. (too often).

Okay, rayw, we're definitely derailing (sorry, wheat). Anyway, I like rayw's idea -- you should offer to rent your camera to them, and oh, how conveniently, the camera rental comes with a "free" cinematographer! :)

The park in question, Fort Clatsop, is about 3 miles from my house. I've worked on a number of shoots there over the years; some for the park, some not. It is a National Memorial, so it is federally funded. Sad state of affairs that they have to beg for freebies, while the feds otherwise seem to have plenty of money to bomb people and subsidize corporate interests.

If you're ever in this region it's worth a visit. They have a full-scale replica of the fort you can play around in.

Its kind of funny seeing this from another angle...as an actor I can't tell you how many projects are for copy/credit/meal...

I wrote a short and I wanted to bring on a crew to shoot it for copy credit and food because the budget was pretty non existent. I posted this on CL and within an hour it had been flagged by angry crew that scoffed at the idea of working for free. I had my own equipment to boot. I posted it 3 times...and finally got the point that they weren't going to let me post with without flagging unless it was paying.

I mean...sure it sucks to not get payed...but you don't have to do it.

That's nuts! Must be an LA thing. Around here most CL gigs are unpaid, which I have no problem with if it's helping out a starving artist. An organization with an operating budget in the millions is another matter entirely.

Like I said, I normly dont complain, live and let live, I LOVE free gigs.. just the public gubment side of this rubbed me the wrong way..

Now that I KNOW its fort clatsop, and they are NOT a National Park as claimed, I feel a bit more forgiving of them. Fort Clatsop is a fun place, about 30 mins from me..

Hey 2001, mayhaps we SHOULD lend a hand here, especially as thats a great location to own you a favor!
