Youtube WTF

Last I heard YT wasn't making money.

That's what will spur all the changes to make it a haven for advertising, and thus cause the mass exodus to the next site that has no ads, will sell to a major corporation at the initial stock offering, then THAT site will become inundated with ads and cause a mass exodus.... 20 GOTO 10, repeat.

Has anyone been on MYSPACE lately? It's horrid. It's a sign of things to come when big sites need money.

Myspace started to have a horrible invasive Spam problem as well. One that that Facebook has fought off better, not perfect, but better.

I can see that happening.

I don't like ads much, I just don't see how they can pay their whopping great bandwidth bill without selling ad space. I'm sure they've wracked their brains... We can sit here and talk about how it annoys us etc etc but a million dollar a week (or whatever) bill has got to be paid somehow.

If anyone had any other ideas I'd like to hear them.

Would you pay a $10 a year access fee? 100 million people would be $1 billion of revenue to apply to storage/bandwidth/maintenance. $50/year for commercial free access? How about $5 per upload?

There have been many schemes discussed regarding "free" sites, and once you mention pay for use you lose 90% of your users. Advertising is the only way to keep it free from fees of any kind. The current way that Google has implemented it - which steers folks toward corporate sponsors rather than user driven favorites - is probably the first step in a long, drawn out downfall.

No no and no. I know they're in a difficult situation. I'm just wondering how they will resolve their situation...

And most people feel that way.

On OPENFILM.COM, they have a $3 a month and $10 a month option to watch short films with no ads....

VIMEO.COM does the Pro-accounts to get more bandwidth and prioritized uploads. I did it for 1 year and chose not to renew. I found I wasn't using anywhere near the free limits after the first few weeks.

So it's a sticky wicket for sure. I don't have any ideas for answers. People like the Internet because everything they love is free.

I think optional pro accounts are one possible way forward, either on the producer or viewer end. Even if only 1-2 per cent sign up, it's a way of generating a solid revenue stream without being too invasive or forcing anything on the majority of users.

I'm going to sign up to Vimeo pro when I get a chance...

I've been looking for a replacement for atomfilms.com ever since it switched to comedy. That was a great site, & it's kind of a shame there's not anything like it now. The way they selected the films, the way first-timers could play alongside their heroes, the public ratings from people who (for the most part) are genuine indie film fans....honest feedback like that is hard to come by.

Looks like YouTube upped their ads. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed, but they run video ads on a majority of videos now. Right at the top, you can choose to skip it after a few seconds.

Vimeo has Plus (the premium version they've had for years) and now they offer a new version called Pro. Plus is $60 and you get a lot more bandwidth, the ability to remove the vimeo logo and change color on embeds and more. Some of it you may be able to do on regular now, not sure. We use the snot out of plus.

Pro is way different. You can actually set a domain to go to with your vimeo channel and get a highly customizable webpage with your video feed, no commercial limitations, replace the vimeo logo with your own logo on their site, your site or any site and again, more bandwidth, etc... I helped set up a pro account for a client that needed it's features. I think it was $200 a year, but he could put all the episodes of his 30 minute show on there without violating any vimeo terms and it was really, really easy to match it all to his site.

Dude use adblock.

No, I mean a for real commercial before the video starts, not a banner ad or anything. It's only on videos set up for revenue sharing it looks like.

I read the thread it sounds like your main problem is the ads that they try to get you to watch before the video or the banner ads they have. Is that the main issue? I agree it is getting crazy every video on every website seems to want to make you watch a commercial before you can actually watch the video you want to watch.

Oh. Well, ever since I started using adblock plus on firefox, I haven't seen a single ad on youtube, whether a banner ad or a commercial before the actual video. And that's on ANY video, from the big youtube stars, to music videos on VEVO, to smaller videos.

I'm almost too scared to turn adblock off and see what its like.

I agree the new layout sucks a bit...

Why? I think it's one of the most amazing sites ever made. Scratch that, one of the most amazing inventions ever. The rise of YT is as important as the invention of the printing press in human history.

I hope you are sarcastic...

You think Youtube was an invention?! The internet was an invention (and not by Al Gore). The modern day vehicle was an invention. Youtube is a website with 1 trillion cat videos and a plethora of idiots crying about whatever is bugging them that day. Youtube could leave us today and there would be a thousand other websites to take its place. If that happened to a real invention (e.g., the printing press).. well... things would be way different.

*off soap-box*

:P

Well, technically someone had to invent the code for flash video. But that wasn't youtube, that was the distributors of online porn. In fact you can thank the porn industry for a lot of technological innovations.

They have been the driver of every major technological advance since the dawn of the internet. They developed all the basic ecommerce functionality that everybody uses now.
