I thought I'd share my latest action-vfx short film, "The Care Package". It was my first time shooting in low light conditions and I used a canon 50mm 1.4, and I was fairly impressed with its superb ability in low light :)

How to make the most of my Canon Powershot?

My camera is a Canon Powershot SX20is. It doesn't have interchangeable lenses, records 720p maximum and the image is very noisy in low light. Not ideal but it's what I've got.

Since there's not much control on depth of field I allways feel very limited by this camera, and the overall look of the image seems much inferior to a 550D/t2i for instance.

How can I make my videos look more interesting with these limitations?
Any advice? I want my videos too look like they were shot on Alexa or RED (just kidding...)

Advice anyone?

Crew Wanted Looking for Director of Photography and other crew

Hello,

We are looking for a Director of Photography to work along side director Eric Blakeney ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0086826/ ) on an independent pilot/web series.

It will be a two camera shoot with a tone similar to "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" or "Party Down."

Our shoot is tentatively scheduled to begin in July. We are a low budget production and would love to have someone work for deferred pay but may have room for some compensation.

We are also looking for the following positions:

Sound

Lighting/Gaffer

Camera Operators

Logline:

Cultural isolation lurking just below the surface makes a young Muslim from Denmark an easy target for radicalization in the name of Jihad.

Synopsis

When recent college graduate Anwar, a Muslim born in Denmark, marries Nahgma, an Indian Muslim; her prosperous father is keen to celebrate the union by treating them to a honeymoon in Hawaii. However, Anwar's father has a markedly different idea in mind to launch their marriage: a visit to the family homeland of Pakistan to acquaint the new bride with Pashtun culture. Reluctantly agreeing, Anwar finds himself in the province of Quetta, and in the forbidding company of Hamid, a member of his extended family who has a palpable madness in his eyes.

Regrettably, this meeting will forever alter Anwar's worldview. When he takes up Hamid's offer to visit a site of American attack as proof that the United States is targeting innocents, Anwar lands in the middle of a skirmish between American Special Forces and the jihadist elements. From there, one traumatic event after another calls into question Anwar's accepted Danish mores, his relationship with his new bride, and his comprehension of Denmark's perceived complicity to Pakistani atrocities at the hands of Americans.

From there, rigorous Jihadist brainwashing quickly transforms a benign Western accountant into an avowed Muslim with a new wife, for whom he has a passion that even surprises him. With that love rendered asunder, Anwar now has the fire to enact the unimaginable, right in his once-beloved Denmark.

With each turn, The Homegrown charts the grave and all-too-common trajectory from world citizen to public enemy, casting crucial light on why terrorists succeed with their message of hatred, and why the western world may be losing in the war of propaganda.

Fundamentally, it is the story of the definition, breaking, and re-making of his character. Thus, he moves from being a more or less vague, dissatisfied, vacillating, and anonymous character to an equally anonymous character, albeit re-made and somewhat hardened in the mold of a terrorist. The irony at the heart of the story is that, in the end, Anwar is no more his own man than he was at the outset, but his closely mentored suffering, combined with his exposure to an exotic and seductive religiosity that appeals to his weak and sentimental nature, makes him an ideal weapon in the hands of higher-ups who, like officers of every stripe, nationality, and era remain safely behind the lines.

Rule Of Thirds In camera?

Hi,

I was studying composition earlier in a bit more in detail and learned a lot more about the rule of thirds. This got me wondering, is there anyway of getting the rule of thirds grid/lines on the viewfinder? Say for example, the 550D? Or is there any software you can download that does this?

Fighting 4 the birth of an Italian independent cinema!

Unfortunately in Italy both movie production and distribution are a privilege that belongs only to a fistful of Majors operating in a total monopoly regime. The repercussions of this anti-democratic system affect the audience whose extremely limited choice inevitably falls on commercial films devoid of social, artistic and communicative value. Cheesy, meaningless comedies and old directors and writers who have nothing left to say, take over all the screens in movie theatres and all the space on TV schedules. These films and these so-called "artists" only please in any possible and questionable way, the system (and its politicians) rather than challenging it.

Italian Cinema needs a regeneration, we need to give visibility to young film-makers, new ideas and quality films!

The new-born independent production company Underdog Film was created for this exact purpose, to be a worthwhile alternative to commercial cinema by making films that show Italy, its society and its current and past political context, with a new style, far from cliches. On the top of that, we wish to bring back that human and collaborative approach to film-making that used to be the prerogative of the most beautiful pictures in the history of Italian cinema.

Uploading 22 Minute Productions For Viewing

Advice on writter's block?

I've been stuck in a writter's block for about two years now and I just do not know how to get out of it. I can come up with an idea for a screenplay but when I start to write I sort of drift off and the story goes nowhere. I never use to be like this before. I just found out more about planning everything out beofre i write. I never use to do that before but I'm going to start it now, hopefully it keeps me on track. I just wanted to see if there was anything more I could do to get out of this funk?
