what ratios does the wide screen in featured movies use? is it doable on regular dv cams just by framing your lense to the correct ratio?

Generally you would crop out the top and bottom of the frame in post. Some cameras have a 16x9 widescreen option, but that tends to record at a lower resolution in most camcorders.
