...and just why, might one ask?

Round #1 (http://www.indietalk.com/showthread.php?t=4377) didn't faze...
Round #2 (http://www.indietalk.com/showthread.php?t=4661&highlight=ITOOFC) was a mere warmup...
Round #3 (http://www.indietalk.com/showthread.php?t=6092&highlight=rules+details), in retrospect, had more competition but still not what it takes to completely knock the wind out of my sails...

...and now there are rumours of a Round #4?! http://www.stevenrichards.com/images/smiley_mono.gif

Complete with prizes of rather dubious worth, no entry fee and the chance to call one's self the "Best on the Board"?

Boardmember HailToTheKing may technically  be the current holder of the ITOOFC belt... but I'm takin' it back.

Anyone who thinks they'll be able to stop me from achieving my goal had better be speakin' up.

Get that gameface on! It's not going to be pretty... but we'll have a blast along the way!

_______

What are the details of Round #4, one may ask?

I have no idea...

Someone does, though...

Way better than Government Cheese.

Government cheese, is full of holes, has a stinky pallate that sours the tasebuds, melts and gets all mushy when you turn the spotlight on it (in an attempt to make itself more appealing), and even though the package makes a lot of promises about what the cheese is going to do for you.. it always falls short of those promises in the first couple of bites.

Good cheese is hard to find these days.

Talked to the cheese guy about releasing a bit of info. I am now at liberty to say that the ITOOFC is returning from the dead just in time for Halloween!

In honor of the holiday we're gonna offer up some treats and play a few tricks. So don't go thinking you got the requirements figured out just yet.

Official announcement will come next Friday (Sept. 16), you will then have six weeks to conceive and complete your short film. Oct. 28th will be the date when the films go live and voting as well as judging will begin. The competition will be over on Friday, Nov. 11.

Lemme see... got a DoP lined up... two actors confirmed, writer is writing, director is at the "visualizing stages".... worried about "the knife"... no way to beat Coot there- dang that's a knife!

Hmmm.. there'll be something from my end- can't guarantee quality, but rest assured.. there will be someting!

After a few days of "cop-out syndrome" where Perfect Sandwich II was a possibility, we will not be making any sequels this month. It would have been about the dead chef, and the knife would have been of the butter variety... but I've got a different idea for this one- hopefully very horror-oriented. We'll see. As a foodish sidenote, I tried a bag of Japanese Squid/Penut Balls called "Squiddy Widdy Nuts". They were disgusting, but I would recommend Bugles as a far superior snack.

I shot the major scene over the weekend. Took us over 9 hours of preperation and shooting to get the two minutes 20 seconds and 2 frames of film and sound that I wanted. I had a great crew. The best talent in people that I call friends. I am ready to shoot the final scene tonight and start getting all the footage together for a great movie.

Things I had to deal with so far.
1. The main actor not being available after this week and not available until 1 day before the end of the competition.
2. Change of location at the last minute for the majore scene.
3. The second character actor not being available until and only last Saturday. (although he is available for ADR in the next few weeks.
4. My lighting blowing out and and trying to find a suitable light souce and having that one blow out.
5. Mosquitos (lots of them and non-union too)
6. No story boards complete.

I have had the time of my life with doing this and I am grateful to even attempt to make something for this competition. I know it will be great and I hope everyone enjoys it.
Soon I will show some type of trailer. :)

Soon I will show some type of trailer. :)

As a reminder (on behalf of head-judge Poke)--

All movie-makers for the competition should keep your project under wraps (that also means no trailers) until after the final deadline.

When you complete your movie, upload it to the webspace you have available and then send a PRIVATE MESSAGE to Poke and/or IndieTalk with the link to your movie. Do not post the link to your movie in this thread (or the official rules thread). This is to keep the competition fair. After the deadline, Poke will release a thread with links to all of the movies, along with a voting box so you can pick your favorite.

If you are not familiar with Private Messaging, just ask and someone will help you out!

Good luck everyone!

I am all scheduled to shoot on sunday. Everything is in place except...... a friggin location!!! Every time I find a place that will work I get rejected and I only have three criteria

wooded
power source (plenty of extension cords)
privatly owned (don't have time to deal with permits)

the last property owner I spoke to was all ready to go untill she found out it was a zombie flick. She said "oh my, zombies. I don't think I am really comfortable with that." Isn't it fun living in the Bible belt. This is probably the woman that headed up the last anti harry potter rally.

Wonder how she would have felt about the sordid, steamy and very graphic interspecies sex scene the we had originally planned.

Otherwise I am finding that most people are not only willing to help but they are eager to help. Zombies and all.

Happy shooting,

Hey, another question. As far as the general concept goes. How general can I make it? Theoretically, if one of the characters rushes over to another character who has just been killed and tries to communicate with them, would that be enough to go with the general idea of communication with someone who is dead?

...if one of the characters rushes over to another character who has just been killed and tries to communicate with them, would that be enough to go with the general idea of communication with someone who is dead?

Generally, we'd like to see more thought put into the communication with the dead, but technically this is trying to communicate with the dead.

Looks like we got a lot of competitors this round. Just be glad I'm judging and not kickin' your arsies.

Are Texers like Reavers?

I guess I should give a mini explaination, Texers was a film we made back in High School for a film class, the actual Texers of the story were a sort of special police. It's like a bad penny, it just keeps turning up in your life.

For a visual picture 17 year old kids running around with guns pretending to be cops... no wait don't, I can't take the exploding heads.

I'd also like the say this about TEXERS: It has a lot in common with Bad Taste, and I think most first time movies for most kids our age... at that time. It's kinda funny. Special task force guys don't have to dress in uniforms, and the possibilities of thier adventures are endless. One of the things that was great about the movie, was that is made in a pre-911 world, and we got away with a lot of stuff we'd never be able to get away with now, and when I say that, I don't just mean content, but if people saw an eight-year old kid running with a rifle, bb gun or not, we'd be in big trouble. It's also been the bane of our existence.. since then making movie to completion has been a HUGE task for us... and a few years ago, one of us (charles from bophe), along with a friend of his (john from bophe) made a movie called FINGER. You all might know it. I feel this inspired us to get back into the movie making thing again, and this competition has been great to help us fuel that. They're small projects, and we can get re-aquainted with the "idie-industry" again. We got a great group of friends, all creative and fun to be with, who are willing to help us out when they can, and I think it's going to be cool that we can grow past a project we all love from our childhoods and prove we can do it! sniff... i'm going to go cry now... pfft!

The problem is, it's really long, and putting it on a dvd with what we got has been tough. It needs a lot of clean=up, and might be too big to post here ever. As of now, it exists only on VHS, and DigiHi8 waiting for transfer. I don't know if any of you will ever be able to see it! Maybe if we did it as a short series..... hmm.....

didn't you get the memo? Filmmaking is all about glamor and parties and making movies like you were making bread. Oh I think well put a film together this weekend. There's not actually any real work or organization that goes into it....

Well this has been an interesting experience.

After three rejections, as I was getting ready to call every one and say "forget it were done," the patron saint of filmmaking smiled upon me and two days before we were scheduled to shoot parents of a friend said "please bring yourself and fifteen other folks over, cover yourself in fake blood, use our electricity and make a film." Apparently this was the last time the patron saint of filmmaking would smile.

That's really not fair since what came next was completely my fault. This apparently includes the poison ivy that most, myself included, seems to have contracted. Its not like I told folks to roll around on the ground, oh wait...... Most of my crew arrived on time, enough of my cast arrived, equipment was tested, and we were ready to go.

Let me interrupt myself here to let all of you know that this was my second short. My first had a cast and crew of four and was shot in my kitchen and living room. Directing fifteen people was just plain intimidating. I swallowed my panic however and pushed on.

I didn't know panic until I looked over the footage after it was all said and done. I was ok with the continutuity issues. I was ok with the lighting issues. I really didn't expect perfect footage considering my lack of experience. I could live with the fact that my film was not going to be as perfect as I know that I will be able to produce in the future. The real panic struck when I realized that the final scene of the movie would not cut. I just didn't have enough footage. Not enough good, bad, usable or unusable footage and with no hope of a reshoot. I still tried though. For a week (ok five days, since I avoided my computer for the first couple of days) I tried to make the footage work. Nope, nada, aint gonna work.

ARGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

OK so lessons learned (that is kinda the point right)

1. when my my gut tells me that an element of a script is not gonna work due to constraints of time, equipment, or experience I am going to listen to my gut and if possible make a change to the script.

2. schedule more time for everything.

3. do not throw the shot list to the wind in order to save time.

4. delegate delegate delegate. In fairness to myself I did this to an extent, just not enough.

5. make sure that my cast and especially my crew has a dedicated babysitter. when making a film in somebodies backyard with a cast and crew of friends I understand that sometimes the kids are going to have to come along so the fact that I had kids on site really didn't upset me. I am not a parent myself by I understand that sometimes the kiddies gotta come along. Unfortunatly the person I had recruited to help keep me organized had her babysitter fall through at the last minute. So next time I will help find, and perhaps provide, and off site babysitter.

6. there are many more minor lessons that have been learned but this post is long enough as it is so I wont bore you with issues about shot lists, continuity, lighting, and on and on.

I will conclude by stating that evey mistake I made, and there were quite a few, I knew better. I have read the books and watched the movies. I suppose that there will always be that seperating from academic understanding and practical understanding. I get it now, the friggin stove is hot. That being said (warning here come more bad cliches) I will dust myself off and get back on the horse. "Change of Seasons" will ride again!!!!

Good luck to all who submit and thanks to indietalk for providing an opportunity for dreamers like myself to get off my ass and get to work.

I agree with you on the mistakes part, I made a few of those, "I know better than to do 'A', but I need to get this shot"

I believe, (as long as my actor comes over today to get the voice dubs down) I will have a good film completed. It is my first movie and for the most part, getting critques, and advice from this great place will be very important to me, besides getting more experience than just sitting on my butt.

I will be waiting for "Change of Seasons" so yeah please finish that.

Here is to everyone on these last few hours - Good luck!

Yea no problem... It was a first time for all of us.. I talked to the editor today, who's still without power, and we talked about it... We both agree that the story and production came out WAY better because everyone OWNES a part of the story.
It wasn't my idea and they just act... It was a totally open forum. Everyone had input and one person wanted this shot... OK then what's the continuity... then we figure it out and shoot the scenes. Each person has their experteise. We knew the shot, we just needed the DOP to set the cam and lighter to set the lights and director to direct and actors to act... then we figure out the next scene and do it again and again.

So yea, you can come and crew one of the shoots sometime. What's your location?
