What I like is that they have dual power supplies, and since I have 2 dedicated circuits in my office, I can plug them into each one, so if one goes out, they still keep runn;n.

How many GB do you have now?

CootDog
07-13-2005, 04:15 PM
I have about a 1Tb... only half is HotSwappable and redundant though.

Man! My office will sure be warm in winter! 26 SCSI drives whining... that's crazy!

We are working on the short for Revelation. We have 5 hours of footage now. I'm going to need 1TB soon.

TBs aren't hard to get these days actually. Get a nice LaCY TB external drive and you're set :)

Coot - sounds like you electric bills must be off the charts!

CootDog
07-13-2005, 05:01 PM
That's true. TBs are pretty easy to get. I mean you can get a 250gb harddrive for a couple hundred bucks, and install 4 of them in your PC gives you 1TB.... but I need stability and no down time or loss of data. I'm looking for security and speed rather than as much disk space as I can get... Although, I can say that my servers and drives and controller card cost me less than the Lacie TB.

Energy bill is fine... I don't leave it on all the time. Only when rendering or editing. Never noticed a difference in the energy bill.

It's cool when that thing starts up too... Or when you turn it off... all these SCSI drived wind down...lol

I was looking at Lacie Tb last night $900 not bad but its USB

Good god, man!

You are working on a short... and you have 5 hours of footage?!

What is your ratio... and why?

CootDog

What format are you shooting your film in? HD? DV? or what?

I assume you're going to be using uncompressed footage in Post, right?

If you're doing it in DV, then you need less throughput that HD.

I would reccomend a FireWire800 drive. It's the latest technology right now and even if you don't have it on your PC, you can get a firewire card.

I didn't catch that Zen... Damn.. 5 hours for a short! :hmm:

And I thought 40 min of footage for my 5 min short was a lot!!! :weird:

Zensteve

With (as of tonight) 6 hours of footage, at a 3:1 ratio his short is a 2-hour feature. :abduct:

SirLaosson

Hey Coot!

You should celebrate your new (obscenely large) server by posting more stills of that captain-lady, in your film. http://www.stevenrichards.com/images/smiley_creepy.gif

We're having a production meeting this weekend so I just might have something for you to see soon...

SirLao... Are you planning on entering the shorts into festivals? and if so, which?

SirLaosson
07-13-2005, 06:06 PM
The 60 min is for the mega series I can give you a quick summary of that.

I'm thinking about it more like we are test our VFX AND SFX and seeing what we can do in the movie.

Wow- big project there, Sir. Four shorts.
Whew. They related?

SirLaosson

Yeah all to one movie

Are you going to cut them together for a feature, or keep them together as individual movies... i'm always interested in these kinds of things. My girlfriend once had an idea to do six short films that come together to make one feature film... worked out the details and it was pretty interesting, but the idea was to have each short survive in it's own right and yet contribute to the final "film". That was a little too daunting, so now she's working on another Shakespeare adaptation and I'm working on some other stuff... just wondering what kind of method you're going about.. will it be a continuing narrative? Or something like Kill Bill, with the shorts being different chapters at different points in the anrrative?

SirLaosson
07-13-2005, 06:26 PM
I looking at most of my footage now. It start to look like individual movies one we have our face painted and we are kicking the shit out of each other with wooden swords and bo. So individual.

On you GF IDea go with it that sounds good,

CootDog
07-13-2005, 06:32 PM
That's actually the plan we have for this 3D movie...

Teaser
Trailer
Episode I
Episode II
Episode III
Episode IV
and maybe Episode V

Each will be released on it's own but will be part of the final movie. We're doing this to get a following. I'm not going into any details, but that's the plan and it's written that way.

SirLaosson

Thats sounds good do you have any stills

Shaw

so now she's working on another Shakespeare adaptation

Dude, your girlfriend rocks!

Spatula
07-13-2005, 07:21 PM
haha- even after I said.. "No more Shakespeare!" We did Hamlet, King Lear 2000, and Macbeth 3000 and needless to say the whole production team has a kind of twisted hateful admiration of the Bard, but we vowed that this trilogy was closed... of course, she's looking at "Henry V" and seeing if we can disguise it as an original post-apocalyptic film so the boys won't know they did Shakespeare until it's all over... hehehe... it's only an idea though... I myself want to do a few shorts focussing on different aspects of film each time, in order to work up to another feature... features are long and hard. And expensive.

I really like adaptations... they are cool. It brings a new generation and introduces them to something they may not know of.
That's one of the reasons I liked "Oh Brother, Where art thou"

As for this big ass server. I'll be installing it tonight, if everything goes as planned.

"No more Shakespeare!"

Time to move onto Marlow. Faustus is always worth a spin.
