Hi.

I am producing a documentary and would like to use a short clip from a Universal Studios Movie.

Are there special agreements for festivals? Will I need another agreement if I use the clip and sell DVDs? What costs can I expect for both festivals and selling DVDs?

Thanks.

I can't tell you what the Universal costs will be but I know that places like gettyimages.com have a price for festival ($1000 was their quote for a very quick audience reaction scene) and another one for dvd distribution.

I'm doing a mocumentary and found the Prelinger Archives www.archive.org, a real treasure trove of completely free public domain clips. It's well organized, indexed and, again, truly free with no strings attached. It was a big help to us on our project, just sharing the love.

Depending on the context of the documentary it may fall under fair use, such as a commentary, or if the subjects in the documentary are actually watching the film at some point in your doucmentary http://centerforsocialmedia.org/rock/backgrounddocs/bestpractices.pdf
