Movie Lincensing for Universal Studios Movie Clip

Hi.

I am producing a documentary and would like to use a short clip from a Universal Studios Movie.

How should I go about securing the rights?

I'd like to 1) show the documentary in a couple of festivals and 2) sell the documentary on DVD.

Will I need seperate agreements for the festivals and DVDs? What kind of costs can I expect?

Universal has a licensing department. Make sure you know as much about the clip as possible, exactly how many minutes/seconds you need to use and exactly how you will use it. Then call them.

Festival and DVD rights must be negotiated along with several others. Asking how much is like asking "How long is string?"

It depends. But figure on thousands.
