I'm assuming this (http://www.matthawkins.com/index.php?module=pagesetter&func=viewpub&tid=5&pid=36) is the tutorial you were speaking of... I didn't see it mention after effects even once, so.. what's the problem you're having? Premiere Pro should be pretty similar to the version they're using in the tutorial. :)

If you want a good alternative program.. get alamDV2
It's somewhat expensive, but very worth it.

I saw this site earlier today, the prices aren't too bad, and it's supposed to work with pretty much any editing solution.

right ok i probably seemed a bit confusing. the site i used was this http://matthawkins.com/index.php?module=pagesetter&func=viewpub&tid=5&pid=36. it contains a tutorial on making muzzle flashes. i get to the point where i have to make the image transparant and reposition it. i cant seem to do this. i was wondering if neone knows how to and that can help. cheers.

just a quick thing. When I was adding muzzle flashes to our short film Imagine I tried a bunch of ways. The way I found worked best for me was.

First went to the frame I wanted the flash on, exported that fram as a picture file. I opened it up in photoshop and dropped my flash onto the spot I liked. Then in the layer that has the flash change it's setting to screen(this makes the black see through and the flash is becomes translucent. At this point you can save the pic, but I like adding a bit more. I go to the airbrush and make the color white and change the opacity to 5% and I paint in the areas I think the gun flash would brighten. You can see in the pic below how I painted on the arm and face. I'm no artist but it's only on for 1 frame. You barely notice it, but it looks really cool like the shot is actually happening. Here are the elements I used, if I can get them to work. Hope this helps.

Thanks will. The details are very important but they take time.

For BROKEN, we did all our muzzle flashes in Apple's Shake. Here is one of our VFX breakdowns: http://www.whatisbroken.com/webdoc_muzzle_small.html
