You should have a video tool to brighten and darken shots. Look under tools - Video tools - Brightness and Contrast.

you'll want to play with both brightness and contrast, I've found just mucking with brightness tends to cause the contrast to go all wonky.. but I suppose if it wasn't changing too much it might not matter.. good luck, and let us know if you need more help.

Select the clip.

Open "Effects", then "Video Effects", then "Adjust".

You'll see about a dozen video filters to play with there.

Yea use the effects list steve gave, i'd try Gamma correction first though, as its what i use to brighten up my dark shots.
