Another filmstudent here :)

I've been wanting to transfer my father's old 8mm films digitally so I can edit them with Final Cut Pro. I'm exploring different ways of transferring them, and am ultiimately looking for the cheapest way but perhaps most importantly the most quality way of going about it.

I hear rank telecine is the best way, but also the most expensive way. I have a Sony TRV950 3CCD camera, and I've heard of people projecting the super8 image onto a screen and simply shooting it with their camera. Any opinions about this method?

Look on ebay.. there's a bunch of telecine units available for not too spendy.
