off screen

Here is another one for you lot:

I have a character who enters the film off screen. As soon as this character is on screen, I do a short description. My question is, before screen time, should I refer to the character by name or just refer to her as female then later refer to the name? Am I making sense?

If the person is off-screen (knocking at the door for instance), you would write it as you see it. You don't know who is behind that door until you see or hear them. Once you see or hear them, you would mention who it is.

There is a knock at the door. JANICE walks to the door and opens it. It is JACK.

And not:

JACK is knocking at the door.

Is that what you mean?

Do it like this:

Claire is walking around like a mortified dunce.

There is a knock at the door.

LISA (O.C)
(through door)
Claire!

Claire shuffles to the door and opens it. LISA, a mousy woman with brown hair and designer sunglasses, is standing outside dressed for a day at the beach.
