View Full Version : Writing/Directing... indietalk 06-10-2004, 06:10 PM I like to write/direct... Pink Guy 06-10-2004, 08:26 PM There's one choice that's missing: All of the Above. Above all, I am a storyteller. If I find the story interesting I want to tell it. Poke indietalk 06-10-2004, 09:09 PM I left it out because I thought too many people would pick it, and the poll wouldn't be interesting ... but I have now added it :-) Director_by_nature 06-11-2004, 07:41 AM I vote drama... however, Iv also directed a Fanatasy Short. So, I guess Drama / Fantasy / horror. Im NOT a comedy person. Since im not funny, I dont think I would make a good comedy Director. Landon Shot Renegade 06-11-2004, 07:55 AM Landon... have you 'really' directed a Fantasy Short? ;) whiterabbit 06-11-2004, 11:12 AM i write whatever i feel like writing. sometimes its comedy, sometimes its action, sometimes its drama, whatever comes to me and stays. chad Shaw 06-11-2004, 11:33 AM Wow, I'm somewhat surprised at the large amount of comedians out there! I find it excutatingly hard to be funny when I try :D. I'm usually funniest when it happens spontaneously out of a sudden situation. It's awesome that so many people can capture their humor on tape though! I personally like Drama. Anything that has an emotional effect upon a person I like to do (haven't tried Horror, don't want too - too overused!) Pink Guy 06-11-2004, 12:27 PM Im NOT a comedy person. Since im not funny. I find some of your posts to be hilarious. Poke indietalk 06-21-2004, 10:48 PM comedy is taking the lead ;) LOGAN L Productions 06-21-2004, 11:16 PM I like to do all of the above, but I do more comedies than anything. Zensteve 06-21-2004, 11:55 PM Gah! Catch up, Sci-Fi! You can do better than that! Shot Renegade 06-22-2004, 06:42 AM We've got far too many comedians in this world! What happened to good old dismal heart rending tear jerking feel s**t factor drama?! ;) christdrinkspee 06-23-2004, 04:49 PM i like Documentaries cuse it gives a real events and tells u whats really going on,so far the one i am workin on is going good. Tine 06-23-2004, 08:29 PM I'm with you Poke CCLVideo 07-15-2004, 10:02 AM Horror 100% I've been writing horror screen plays since I was 12, I watch every horror film I can even if it's the worst thing I've ever seen just so I can make sure that when I write something I can try my best to keep it as original as possible. Sci-Fi is a close second though. stbd1 07-15-2004, 01:53 PM I enjoy writing everything, and directing different genres is a nice challenge, but I find I can't keep comedy out of whatever it is I'm writing. LloydTheGreat 07-15-2004, 06:48 PM I tend to try and keep comedy out of my movies in the dialouge, as verbal comedy thats funny in one place usually doesnt go down too well in many other places around the world. Physical comedy always works - a man slipping on a banana in china is just as funny as a man slipping on a banana in America. So I tend not to be so strict with that. My movies are usually all-rounders, at least the ones I write and aspire to make that is :) The movies I have made range from musical, exploitation, action and (dare i say it ?) film noir - i have also helped out in the making of an animation. But if i HAD pick ONE genre to make I know what it is I would go far, but im not sure if theres a name for it. I just love movies where there is one main character, and he is lost in a world he doesnt understand - a metropolis that he cant find a way out of as it is so big, and things just keep on getting worse and worse for him. Think of an anime like Metropolis, or movies like The Matrix/Total Recall/Blade Runner/Brazil/ or even the very promising first 20mins of ''The Mexican'' etc etc etc. Infact I think there is a name for this type of movie, 'sci fi'. But i think it may be a coincidence. Zensteve 07-15-2004, 06:54 PM How about Patrick McGoohan's "The Prisoner", Mr Great? http://www.stevenrichards.com/images/smiley_badger.gif stbd1 07-15-2004, 07:36 PM I tend to try and keep comedy out of my movies in the dialouge, as verbal comedy thats funny in one place usually doesnt go down too well in many other places around the world. True. In fact, dialogue-based comedy is a very narrow street because it doesn't even play well outside a certain class. Woody Allen, Whit Stillman, Kevin Smith etc., have carved out a healthy niche for themselves in the process, though. I don't mind aiming for the same. Shaw 07-15-2004, 07:44 PM Comedy is a very hard thing to do well. So often it comes across as forced (well so does a serious movie for that matter...). I have always found it interesting how the indie scene seems to be largely Horror flicks (though this poll doesn't seem to support that analysis). LloydTheGreat 07-16-2004, 07:12 AM Ive never seen Patrick McGoohan's The Prisoner, but according to my dad it is certainly the sort of thing that I would like. Ill keep an eye out for it :) sourmonkey 08-25-2004, 01:21 PM I voted for sci fi. I love the genre, except that most sci fi's fall short of the credibility threshold. I think it's a lack of imagination. Personally, I despise most of what comes out of Hollywood. This film "factory" only proves that you don't need vision or imagination to produce a film. I was a projectionist for four years, and it always amazed me that Hollywood studios would spend multi millions on a film, and then distribute their prints to theaters which pay their film "handlers" just a bit above minimum wage. This is probably different in the bigger cities, but in central Texas, this seemed to be the norm. it's rediculous! I've mostly stopped going to movies for these reasons. I'm very selective. On the sci fi note, there's so much research coming out of science right now that could be used as the subtext to some great sci fi stories. I think the Matrix is a good example of this. SuperSoupy 08-25-2004, 05:10 PM I voted animation. i love it and everything about it, simple as that. if given the right amount of resources there is so much that can be applied into an animated film. anyone whos seen any miyazaki films like princess mononoke can see how well an idea from someones head can be portrayed so accurately, and how such fantasy would not be the same if made in any other medium. i suppose animation ideas can be portrayed so accurately because the film makers have complete control on everything, right down to the main character's hair movements. dudebro 09-15-2004, 02:17 AM "You are number 6." -- "I am not a number, I am a free man!" I agree with Poke about general story telling, though I love to make folks laugh. I also think the documentary is incredibly important for human evolution and history preservation. But I voted for experimental cuz I'm feeling creative right now. Must be the beers. "Who is number 1?" err, by "the prisoner" you do mean that funky british tv program? Zensteve 09-15-2004, 02:47 AM err, by "the prisoner" you do mean that funky british tv program? "That... would be telling..." http://www.stevenrichards.com/images/smiley_ninja.gif Be seeing you. slacker 09-15-2004, 06:51 AM well i agree with Lloyd the Great, or is that just Lloyd? his "lost in a world he doesnt understand" genre is quite good. Brazil is one of my all time top ten. but i would have to say all genres are good for me. Except fantasy, not a big fan. except LOTR, Legend etc. but havent seen to much fantasy. rizien 09-15-2004, 03:32 PM Drama and comedies for me, but i picked all because i can/would do ANY genre. Nique Zoolio 03-10-2005, 04:41 AM i write comedy plays/scripts professionally (stand up comic and all), but i write the more serious stuff as a hobby, but everything i write i find is injected in some way with my own humour (except on forums) - even when it shouldn't be, such as that outrageous speech i gave at a friend's wedding (i did warn him!!!!!)........ WriteumCowboy 07-17-2005, 10:06 PM Your poll is too limited. You should be able to vote for more than one genre. Personally I write westerns, comedies, action/thriller and drama...and I'm just getting warmed up. WC Satire 07-31-2005, 09:17 AM Fiction holds little interest for me as there is so much that is true in life that needs to be on film. So Historical Drama and Biography would be high on my list with comedy a close second as in Drama with a sense of humor. True stories also include Action, War, History, Love Stories, Murder and Crime. I really enjoy leaving the theatre havein learned something. Satire Boz Uriel 07-31-2005, 06:21 PM Only one other person wants to do art films? Excuse me while I gasp. :hmm: Bl33dingskyproductions 08-12-2005, 10:50 AM C'mon sci-fi all the way!! *checks current project* Fantasy comedy? oops... Thirdrailbe 08-12-2005, 12:49 PM Horror is king because hollywood doesn't pay attention to it . And I love that. Rob Zombie once said "Making a horror movie in Hollywood is like making a porn." :D Just Another Yokel 08-29-2005, 10:19 PM I put down comedy, but the comedy that I write isn't anywhere close to the comedies that have a combination of Luke Wilson/Owen Wilson/Will Ferrell/Ben Stiller/Jack Black/Steve Carell/VInce Vaugh/Ben Stiller or all together. Besides any time I try to write the scene where the family cries over the casket of the dead patriarch, somebody puts in a brick a weed and everybody laughs during the cremation. The next Fassbinder I definitely am not. knightly 08-29-2005, 10:54 PM I chose all. Simply due to the fact that I'm working on making it to all these genre sometime. I've done comedy and find it pretty easy. Shoot until everyone laughs and then put together the funniest deliveries in editing. I'm working on a romantic comedy with a thriller twist now, I'm finding drama much more difficult to deliver as a director than comedy. Of course, my friends and I do extemporaneous comedy for 5 hours a day 7 weekends out of the year at the local renaissance festival, so we all understand the timing, content and delivery of funny. I've been practicing it for the past 20 years or so. Drama seems foreign (but challenging) to me as a director. I know when it's done right, but have little experience getting it there. That will be next year's project. I have another friend who will be doing some sci-fi stuff, so I'll get some experience there...talk to me in another year or two...I'll let you know then. Hughes 08-31-2005, 09:45 AM I chose all. I defintaly could not stick with one genre. Those with true talents attempt various types. |
