I'm trying to get my first camera for shooting and came across the Panasonic HDC-SD80 (http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-HDC...=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1337389769&sr=1-1) and was wondering what you guys think of it? Also, any other input on a good first camera would be appreciated (i'm trying to keep it below $400).

I have heard that this is one of the best cameras for a small budget. I would definitely recommend it.

Dekabal - at your price point, I would get the 2012 model, the HC-V500MK with 16GB of built-in memory. It has a longer zoom, and is wider at the long end (good for interiors).
If you can stretch your budget a little, a used Canon T2i would a good entry level interchangeable lens, large sensor video capable camera. They are $399 used at Amazon. Save up $90 more for a used Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens, and you'll have an interchangeable lens large sensor video camera for the price of a consumer camcorder that can produce images like this:
