Royalty free sound effects

Does anybody know of an archive of royalty free sound effects and atmosphere setting music? I've found some but they are pay-per-file based companies and I don't really want to have to scour through thousands of loops on a website.

Thanks in advance.

Believe it or not, you can find inexpensive, royalty free SFX on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Both have them in their music stores under Miscellaneous-Sound Effects. Stay away from the 'halloween house' stuff, there are several multi volume collections of pro quality stuff from labels like Warner Bros. & Electra/Asylum.

Look for “free use” in a search. Exclude “buyout” or “trial” in the search for best results. I’d send you my favorites, but my hard drive at home crashed the other night and I have to send it in for service. And you will have to do a lot of searching to get something similar to what you want. Just remember to print out and keep the page that says that this is free use material for your records. What is probably happening is you are searching for “royalty free” which is another term for “buyout” which means you pay a one-time fee and can use it forever without paying royalties. Buyout music is often better quality than free use (and a hell of a lot easier to find). There is a guy on this site which has listed his music available http://indietalk.com:/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1464 for free. It’s good stuff.

I bought oodles o' music from here...

Haven't bought anything in a few years... but he had it all, for sure.

Some of the prices reflect the sources... but there was a lot of very good budget fare as well, though.

Also, right at about the time that "Flash" was becoming popular, he was bundling cheap CDs for the amateur webdesigners... with loops, tunes and soundFX for web-based multimedia, that sounded good in video, too.

If you are looking for more along the lines of "free"....

Adittionally, you can go to any larger record shop and buy soundFX CDs. They are most normally seen at Halloween time (spooky sounds), but the big stores carry a selection of "everyday" sound FX volumes. Be sure to read the cd-case for permissions, before buying. There was one cd company that would sell the CDs, but not "allow" you to use it for anything, aside from the cd-player.
