The old reliable "What camera should I buy?" thread

Hey gang,

Not gonna ruch out and get a new camera tomorrow, but I'm just curious as to what people might recommend to replace my Canon GL-2. I really like it and it still works well, but in the next year or so I'm going to want to probably go to HD and I just wanna know what people would recommend. I need something that will let me hook up an external mic and would like it to do a pretty good job in low light situations. Was thinking maybe a Canon XF-100? That seems to be the new GL-2 (so to speak) but I'm open to suggestions. Has anyone used a XF-100 that can give me the lowdown? Also any other cameras in that price range (under 3 grand ideally) that I ought to consider? Thanks!

Hi, shawn

I'm going to take a fair guess that you're not onto the DSLR route which would likely put a Panasonic GH2 on your tripod, and instead you're looking for a traditional running and gunning video camera with superior audio recording abilities.
Sound about right?

Camera wise, I'd limit my search, in the price neighborhood you're looking at, by interchangeable lenses and then by full 1080p since editing with 1080i is problematic.

Then I'd go on to hunt for a camera with XLR jacks to eliminate/reduce long line (cable) interference between mic and camera.
And everyone is going to "tell you" to get your audio off your camera, so headzup. ;)

Regarding the hard specs on the Canon XF100, for a fair bit less the Canon XA10 (XLR jacks) or even Canon Vixia HF G10 (mini jack) may suit your needs at a lower cost.
(Take the price difference between the XA10 and HFG10 to apply towards a Tascam DR100, boompole, and shotgun kit setup).

Hey Ray,

Thanks for the fast reply. Yeah, I was probably looking at a run-and-gun type of setup Don't really know much about the DSLRs although a buddy of mine who does music videos has one and the results look pretty good. He doesn't really have to worry about recording sound though. I did have a look at the XA-10 and I like that it has most of the same specs as the XF100, but I don't really like that it doesnt seem to have any buttons. I don't think I wanna have to go through a touch screen every time I want to change settings. I've already got the boom pole and shotgun mic, which is one of the reasons I'd prefer that whatever I get has an XLR input. Just wondering if there's anyone out there who has used these Canons? I like to get my advice straight from the horse's mouth if I can manage it.
