Nikon raises their game with D4

If I had $6,000 sitting around, I'd get this.
Remote controls, 4:2:2 color, uncompressed hdmi out, manual audio controls, oh my.

Given the way Nikon operate, they always launch their highest product before the lower product. I can imagine, in 3 to 5 mo, they will offer something along the line of a D700 upgrade/replacement with almost similar features for 3,000.

Let's hope it's all the features and more in the next product launch.

From Nikon Website:

Audio recording format - Linear PCM
Audio recording device - Built-in monaural or external stereo microphone; sensitivity adjustable

Audio input - Stereo mini-pin jack (3.5-mm diameter; plug-in power supported)
Audio output - Stereo mini-pin jack (3.5-mm diameter)

That's all that I can find on the audio specs of the D4. If anyone has found more I would love to hear about it!

Wait, I thought it had some decent audio specs? I know it has menu based level control and I think also headphone monitoring.

Well, these are all things that a Zoom H1 can do, and do much better - and the H1 costs less than $90. In fact, the H1 can record WAV format at up to 24-bit/96kHz; the D4 uses linear PCM, a compressed audio format, and they don't even give a bit/sample rate. For $6,000 I would expect that the D4 would at least be able to do all the audio chores a $90 toy from Zoom can do.

But as I mentioned, no matter what the buzz about the D4, it is a still camera that is being drafted into doing video work.
