Kevin Smith gives great tips on directing on the set. The advice is more specific than just "have an uncle that works in Hollywood" and the like.

I love this one. Spielberg just owning it on the set of Jurassic Park. He's got every thing down to the finest details. He makes sure everyone knows what they're doing and when to do it. It's really great to watch him keep it together on such a huge project.
