There are a couple that are done online. But for me, 80% of the fun of the 48HFP is getting together with all the other filmmakers, and with your own cast/crew, to watch everybody's work, on the big screen. An online contest ruins the fun.

its like eating sugar, instead of snorting cocaine. sure, similar result, but its the RIDE, MAN!!

I've been thinking about starting the 48 Week Film Challenge for those who think they have the chops to make a 15 minute short in just under a year.

I've been looking for some too, even online as long as there's decent participation. I get what you say about meeting other filmmakers, but the 36 hour online one we did was great because we bonded as a team that much more. That, and most of us are usually out of town for the Dallas 48 hour. It's the same weekend as NAB.
