watch First Attempt at FX

Using a sony dcr-sr85 and editing with final cut express
Thanks for the advise, I'll talk to my group about it.

Rather than doing a straight key on the muzzle flashes, right click on the muzzle flash clip and choose "Cmposite Mode" > "Screen". This will knock out the black from the edges leaving the flames behind. They are very static as well, check out the clips available at Detonation films: http://www.detonationfilms.com/free_stuff.htm

They also have how tos for doing the overlays... for the spraying FX when the guy gets hit in the head, adding some motion to the origin can allow for a bit more realism when he gets shot and stop the effect from just being a stamp. Knowing what you need, don't be afraid to make your own splatters for those by filming against a white board, ketchup packets being squeezed or hit with a hammer... this will be "Multiplied" rather than Screened in your editor.
