A camera for beginners...

Hi,

I'm pretty new to all this, but I fancy trying my hand at some amateur film making. In terms of projects, I'd like to create a short stop-motion film and a documentary. After surfing the web for more hours than I like to count I've made little progress in choosing a camera to start with.

As it stands I'm thinking of getting a Sony Bloggie (MHS), as it's cheap, small and seems fairly efficient at its job. That prices in at £140. My budget is anywhere up to £450 really, but that'd be pushing the boat out somewhat. For an absolute beginner what would be the best way to use my money? I've also been looking at the Canon 500D and Nikon D5000, but they'd be the absolute top end of my budget.

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer me,

Jack.

I'm not a fan of the DSLR cameras. But following my post you
will get those who are and swear by them. In order to get up
to production standards you will need to spend more on accessories.

Any camera from the major manufacturers will be fine for a
beginner camera. Sony, Panasonic, Canon and JVC all make fine
cameras in your price range. Don't worry about which model or
which brand - they are all nearly identical.

Look for one with a mic input. You will need a good shotgun mic.
Any camera with manual controls is going to be more versatile
than one that is fully automatic. So that's what you should look
for. Then you can flip a coin. I'm dead serious. You won't be able
to notice any difference in your price range.

Directorik did not steer you wrong..a must have to get decent footage is manual controls and mic input, HD is not a must either IMO If you do go w/ DSLR stck w/ Canon.

Main thing is master the use of manual controls and the art of filmmaking. Composition, Lighting, Movement and on and on...
