watch Extremely Thought Provoking Dark-Comedy "This Wretched Life" (2010)

Hello everyone, filmmaker Frankie J. Mosca here... I'm looking for some feedback on my new movie "This Wretched Life" (2010). I am also networking to find anyone that can be an asset to a new team I am putting together to make another feature movie. Looking forward to a great discussion here. Thanks.

I liked the 2nd trailer, it looks interesting. I don't think a trailer or teaser or whatever should include sex scenes though, I dunno, that's just me, I don't know anything about making trailers. Just from a viewers point of, er, view.
I'd like to see the whole thing :)

The acting seems very good, and the song really makes the trailers. The shots are great.

My only problem: I know it's miniDV or some type of digital tape, the overall look just rubs me the wrong way.

Anyway, Good Luck. I hope you have much success.

Yea, Probably not.

That's an asshole thing to say. Perhaps it's good that you're not a regular member of this forum.

Frankie, welcome to the boards, and congrats on FINALLY finishing this feature. 8 years? Really? Damn, it must feel good to be done with it.

Are you done with the trailer? I kinda get the impression that you are, but if you're even slightly considering re-cutting the trailer, I've got some insight -- I just don't wanna offer advice if it's not what you're looking for.

Cheers.

I wasn't going to say anything but honestly, this type of movie isn't my cup of tea as it were.

But, I am glad you finished that long trek - every filmmaker deserves a pat on the back for having spent that amount of time and effort into something.

Responses to all the great comments...

To "insert_cliche_here"... I hear you about having a sex scene in the trailer; the original trailer did not have that... funny thing is that until we opened with that scene, viewers were not responding much at all. So we sat back and cooked up an idea that would grab most anyone's attention whether they liked it or not. I'm feeling now however that a new trailer may be necessary, being that sex is not one of the major themes of the movie.

To "ussinners"... You stated "The acting seems very good, and the song really makes the trailers. The shots are great."... those are great words to hear for an indie filmmaker... we did not have the budget for Film or even HD at the time, being that this project was started in 2001 when HD was still expensive. I feel, and a lot of other viewers feel, that this particular movie was meant to be shot of DV... it gives it the grungy and bizarre look the project calls for. We shot on the Sony DSR-PD150 (DVcam) in 2001 & on the Panasonic AG-DVX100A in 2009/2010. I dream of filming on 35mm one day.

To "Cracker Funk"... Thanks; I'm glad to have found this site, and to be a member of the boards. Yes, it is a major relief to be finished with this project. It was an unbelievable experience; I am ready to move on now. I would love some advice for a new trailer. I am always looking for better ways to advertise and promote the movie.

To "ROC" Thanks, and yes, some people will love this movie, and some will hate it; but I guess that goes for any movie... one reviewer on imdb stated "If you're a fan of filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, David Lynch, Darren Aronofsky, Paul Thomas Anderson, Jim Jarmusch, Gus Van Sant, Stanley Kubrick, etc, you will most definitely enjoy this movie" and I definitely could not agree with that more.

To "loganm187" There is nothing wrong with being honest. I initially thought that you may have left a message on the wrong post or something. The film is not a porn or even close to a soft porn... I guess that is a big problem with the new trailer... we just took that route in order to grab the attention of as many viewers as possible. The movie has a very deep story, and that opening sex scene in the trailer is actually one of the comic scenes in the movie that follows a whole lot of drama. It's not even meant to be taken very seriously, and delivers a much needed laugh in the movie. I will check out your links in the next couple days when I have time.

Thanks to everyone for all the great comments here; it's great to be a part of this forum.

Frankie

Cool. The "hype-reel" -- to be completely frank, no insult intended, I would just toss that one out. I'm not a fan of the gratuitous use of sex to hook us in, and then after that, it's just too much melodrama, without telling us much about the story. And the music doesn't match what we're seeing.

I like "Trailer 2" a lot better; that's the one I'd keep, and if it were me, I'd only tweek it a little.

First, I'd get rid of the swipe. Unless you're George Lucas, that just screams amateur, in my opinion.

I'd also get rid of the titles that keep popping up -- "Addiction", "Irrattable Bowl", "Etc". They're not really necessary, cuz the video starts with the counselor mentioning that everybody's got their own problems, then we see examples of all of these problems. It's all there, in the video, no need to dumb it down for us with those titles, plus, they just don't look good.

I like your use of music in this one. Especially at the end, when the music quiets down, and we see the dude crying. For me, that's the most effective ending to the trailer. The dude's temper-tantrum that comes immediately afterwards might work in the movie, but in the trailer, it's just a bit too much.

Also, I definitely would cut out the hip-hop that comes in, almost like a prologue to the trailer. What's it doing there? The trailer's done already; just end it.

My last thought -- whose story is this? I'm a little concerned about whether or not we have a hero with a conflict that is central to the movie.

Nice work, I hope these thoughts help. Cheers.

It looks like you guys probably had fun making this film. The acting looks good, the sound (from the initial guys schpeel) is pretty good, and the shots are pretty cool.

I'm curious as to how the story holds up for some reason.

The image quality is OK, and you have some interesting lighting...

Good luck with this.

reponse...

To "Cracker Funk"... thanks for all the great feedback; I'm going to take a lot of what you stated into consideration for the next cut. Again, thanks for taking the time to give me some great feedback; I truly appreciate it.

To "M1chae1"... there were a lot of laughs & a lot of tears, but looking back, it was a great learning experience; I'm ready to roll forward now! As for the story; people seem to dig it... check out the imdb reviews if you have a chance.

I will post the new trailer for review once it's finished. Going to be awhile, however, as I'm overwhelmed with work.

Frankie :D

THE DISCO EXORCIST -- official teaser trailer

To "M1chae1"... I just check out your teaser trailer for "The Disco Exorcist." Great use of make-up dude! Your titles are great as well. I found the trailer to be very interesting overall. Where are you from? Keep in touch!

-slugs? the word motion/growing looks unprofessional
-Typography- I don't like the typography on the poster, it looks jumbled but the font is ok.
-lighting? the natural lighting works but the colors look washed out and grainy, especially the first shot. Image quality is so important, especially on an indie film.
-protagonist/characters? I don't see a clear main actor or actors, it's just a montage of people in wretched situations. Is this movie a montage, or multiple threads of narrative that come together a la Magnolia? I'd like to see more of this, the acting looks good. :)

To my taste, the lighting and camera work are just atrocious, very "amateurish". That being said, might be an interesting story, and finishing any film, especially a feature is cause for celebration.

Forget the Trailer... ENTIRE FEATURE RIGHT HERE!!!!!

Check out my entire feature movie "This Wretched Life" (2010), and we can have a great discussion here. Also, it would be great if viewers could review and star the movie at the Internet Movie Database after watching.
