www.filmtransfer.com....

Hello

I'm looking for a reasonably priced way to convert my rolls of Super 8 to digital. From what I've seen on www.filmtransfer.com, their prices look awesome. Almost too awesome. So that begs the question:

Has anybody used this company before for transfering Super 8 to digital?
What were the results?
How much of the picture was cropped for "HD"?

Thanks in advance

Interesting.

They dodge around what the actual mechanics are, but reading between the lines I suspect they are using a Sniper with an HD camera, or similar. I can't say for sure, though. Ask 'em :)

I've had footage transfered with a Sniper before, but onto an SD camera. It was... okay. I think SonnyBoo owns (or at least uses) one of these, and has had better results than myself.

You usually get to choose how you want it framed.

If you take a look at Pro8mm's website, after you've recovered from the coronary arrest at seeing their high prices, you should be able to find a graphic that visually shows the different framing options. I'm not sure if that works/applies to a Sniper, but it does for pretty much any regular telecine - HD or SD.

At any rate, there are several ways to get the film transferred.

Edit: They do use the Sniper.

I'm hoping to use this place: http://www.moviestuff.tv/transfers.html

(Just emailed them earlier today, waiting for a reply) for some 16mm transfers.

I guess they'll do 1 roll free (water marked) to show the results they get.

Interesting.

They are pretty specific about only processing reversal, not negative. Given their setup that makes sense. I imagine though they could take a positive print from negative stock as well?

Might have to give these folks a call later this year.

I became sidetracked from the 16 stuff I need done (And might be for a while yet actually), so I haven't called them, but I was dissapointed that they never returned my email.

If you happen to contact or use them, please let me (Us) know how that goes quality and service wise.

Will do.

I won't have too much work for them if they can't do a positive print though. I didn't shoot very much reversal in college, but I have a ton of clips that I want transferred with solid quality to bolster my reel.

Been looking at a DIY solution for this, but finding a projector that can click single frames is proving difficult.
