Jag35ST (Cheap 35mm Adapter)?

I was doing some research on 35mm lens adapters, and being a student, I'm not entirely willing to pay so much for them.

I stumbled upon the Jag35ST and it starts at $199.

Is there a reason for this cheap price? What are the disadvantages?

Thanks,
Jeremy

I own one. It works very well, but it is cheap not only in price. The disadvantage is that it's not the most expensive glass or components. It is put together in a garage in LA by a hobbyist, as opposed to constructed at a factory.

Now, that said, it works very well and is worth the money. Can you compare it to the +$1,000 models? No, but you get more than you are paying for at it's price.

Heh, I had to look this one up:

It even comes with a (used) lens to toss on the end!

I'm tempted to get one for my HV40 - it's the right price for my broke ass.

What is the optional Achromat, btw?

I'm not familiar with achromat, but here's this:

And that Jag package looks like a great deal. I would go for it if I were you. You'll have so much fun with the adapter

It's also nice that it appears to have the canon FD mount by default. Canon FD lenses are really cheap because no one wants manual anymore, I recently saw a 50mm F/1.2 (!!!) go unsold on ebay for 9 bucks plus some shipping! Which is just incredible because the quality of an f/1.2 is a huge huge huge jump from the f/1.4, even. Those just drink up the light. And check out what the EOS version of that lens retails for (not that you can find anyone selling a used one for less...)

Thanks for the info, guys.

I found another cheap adapter (doesn't come with lens).

http://www.vid-atlantic.com/EnCinema35.html

Because I need international shipment, I'm currently leaning towards the EnCinema adapter - It's $229 including shipping (no used lens) while the Jag35ST is $259 (with achromat and no shipping).

Anyone use the EnCinema adapter?

Edit: I'm also considering the Jag35Pro (with achromat and lens). I just need to figure out the major difference between the Jag and the EnCinema adapter. By the way, the JagST (adapter only, no achromat) is $99, not $199...

Thanks Dreadylocks, I've been YouTubing a lot of demo videos haha. The Jag35 ones seem to appear with grain and dust - I sent an email to EnCinema (the guy's really friendly too) and he told me the benefits of his adapter (though right now, I'm thinking of getting a 7D).

Parts of his email:
The main difference between our adapters and other adapters is that we use a Canon focusing screen making the final image very sharp and hardly any grain is visible using these screens

The Canon screens are rare and expensive so that is why ours also cost more to make.

If taken care of the static adapters are just as good as the $2k+ adapters. We shot a music video with the Letus 35 and our EnCinema back to back with no problems at all. It went on to win an MTV vma last year.

He also said that his Jag35 broke down a few days after using it, and he had to send it back to the company to fix it. Then after they sent it back, it broke down again. He said it was due to their use of glue. EnCinema adapters use modular parts, and no glue.

I'm quite convinced...
