Random question about Hurt Locker

I was watching Hurt Locker today and I have a random question:

They filmed in Jordan.

How much security did they have to have to be able to shoot a film with explosions and snipers and all that sort of thing?

You would think if the wrong eyes saw them something bad could happen.

I'm curious to know how film crews go about setting something up like that.

Anyone know?

Jordan has a thriving tourist industry and a film commission. They
actively encourage filmmakers from all over the world to shoot
there. Canada, Brazil, India, Italy, the UK and the US make movies
in Jordan. “The Mummy Returns” was shot there in 2001. Gus Van
Sant shot “Gerry” there. “Transformers” was shot there. Brian de
Palma was shooting “Redacted” there not long before Bigelow
started her film.

Security would be handled just like any other movie. Film crews
would contact the film commission, scout locations, pull permits,
rent their equipment, hire local crews and shoot just like they
would in any country. Explosions, snipers and that kind of thing
are done with plenty of notice to the locals and with crew and
equipment all in plain view.

I didn't see Hurt Locker, but your question reminded me of an interview I heard a little bit ago. I found the link for you:

It's the director of Slumdog Millionaire and while India isn't a war-zone, I think many of the same challenges would exist.

Hi Dreadylocks,

I am from India. Could you throw some light on the phrase "same challenges"? I am really curious to know what you think those "same challenges" are.

Well in the case of Slumdog Millionaire, I was saying that I would think (and I could be wrong), that filming in the slums of Bombay is a very dangerous thing to do. In the interview, the director talks about scouting locations in some very shady areas. I obviously wasn't referring to Bollywood.

Sounds like Jordan is pretty set up for film though.
