Recording sound from far away shot

How is the sound recorded when the camera is far from the subject? I guess an example would be in Reservoir Dogs when the subjects talking are in the middle of a big room... where is the sound recorded from? Lavalieres?

You either have a sound guy with his own battery powered equipment micing them in a hidden location, or you have the actors wearing 'lavs' (which are battery powered mics they clip onto their shirts out of sight).

For this you would use wireless lavs on actors. but in the case of the film you mention, most if not all the sound from this film was trashed and the entire film in the end was ADR because the sound was bad and they never had a good sound person while shooting and more money was spent on post sound then the cost of shooting the film.

so lesson here, hire a good sound person and save tons of money.

but to answer your question, a good sound person with good gear and knowledge would of had to wire all the actors in the scene. not always the best thing to work with, but many times the only way out and only way to save a scene.
