Question about revenue

Hi,

Does anyone have any information regarding figures for documentary purchases. For example, how much might a cable/satellite station pay for a topic specific documentary. For example, the food network might purchase a documentary on fast food for ....?

And educational institutions, whats the markup for charging these entities for copies of DVD? I've seen some people charge $30 for educational institutions for a DVD purchase? vs. a $15 price point for an end user.

Thanks.

Stations don't have a set price or even a price range. The Food
Network might purchase the broadcast rights to a documentary
for tens of thousands of dollars or for as little as a few hundred
a showing. The most likely scenario is a station will purchase
the right to show a doc (for example) 15 times in a 12 month
period for $15,000 rather than purchase it outright.

ah. thanks directorik, so the purchase comes with it a # of viewings, and a term agreement also?

The reason I ask is, Im trying to put together a revenue projection for a film project I'm working on, and I wanted to put something realistic.

Doesn't work this way. Very few cable outlets buy a ready-made doc. HBO, Sundance, IFC might, bt HBO would rather you submit the idea before you shoot. If you've got a great story (mother of kid with dwarfism), Sheila Nevins will work with you, even if you're a first-time filmmaker.

Otherwise, look for a distribution company.
