Hi, i had some software for xp but I have upgraded to vista and would like to get some new software as my old one didn’t work on vista.

Try Celtx (http://www.celtx.com/download.html).

The software is free (and pretty cool).

There's a nominal fee if you want to do a lot of online collaboration (via their Celtx Studios), but that's optional.

I'll second that...Celtx has been pretty revolutionary for me. I've written more with it than anything else I've ever tried before.

See if what you were using has an update.

Another vote for celtx here. Probably one of the best free apps out there.

Give Celtx a try, and don't overlook the tools in it.

I was thinking about this very thing a week ago or so. I wondered if anyone here was using the Studio features - mainly the collaboration piece of it.

I used to use the Online component, but don't since they started charging for it. I'm not in a position where I can justify the expense at this time... but when I was using it, it was very useful and allowed distributed preproduction amongst our main crew at YAFI... I loves me my CELTX!

I dont use it. I dont think its that much money if you are using it alot, but you can always email the file.

I have a local web/ftp server I use for my clients anyway. I just made a folder on that drive that people can access. I keep the celtx file there. Theres several ways your team can access the folder with a web browser, ftp or even a windows folder.

I just add the revision number to the Celtx file name and everyone can keep up with it easily.

For the non-techy people that want to do this you need an extra PC (or Mac) that you can leave on all the time.

You can also do the same if you have a webhosting account or even photo space (picasa, photobucket, etc). Although having a webserver thats connected to your local network is muuuuuch faster and easier to deal with. Having a common space to store everything related to your film that allows all of your team to access makes things easier. I couldnt operate without it. I can even setup a project manager, calendar, wiki, etc.

I could write a tutorial on setting this up if enough people were interested.

I guess it's unanimous. Celtx is the way to go. Ever since I switched from Word, I've never looked back.

I do. I worked on my last film from home, and also during slow periods at my job. It was woth the money to not have to send myself the most recent copy back and forth. No matter what computer I'm on I just download the most recent version from the server. This USED to be free, but now costs 49.99 a year or something.

I used a demo of it for a while, found it incredibly frustrating in parts and quite intuitive in others. I'll have to give Celtx a go...

I recommend celtx to my students. There is also scripped and, by chance, I stumbled upon a screenwriting template in microsoft office.

Thanks! I searched the forums and no one had mentioned this one before you: www.scripped.com

EDIT: Personally I would never store my script on a site. I like using software.

Count me in, I would love to see how you do it.

I would imagine a CVS system for code collaboration could serve to do the same thing.

Yea, you're right Knightly. We tried that for a while, but with just 3 or 4 of use working on it, it was just easier to do it by file name. I've used a project manager script (phpprojekt I think) for this too. That works well if you have a big team. It has a file repository, forums, calendar, etc.

I'll see if I cant dig up some directions for setting up a web and ftp server for you Stardust.

You store it locally as well (or you SHOULD). The server is just a nice way to collaborate, or keep the script synced between multiple computers. If I sit down at my work computer, and I can't remember if I changed something on it at home last night, then step one is get a fresh copy.
