With the use of Final Cut Studio, how would I make subtitles with white text with a black background? Not black outline but black background. Wish I had an example but I think I'm explaining it correctly.

Do you mean like how a block of closed-captioned text for the hearing impaired would look?

I MIGHT have figured it out by selecting 'text' in the lower right hand corner of the viewer. We'll see.

I would just create the black text box in photoshop and just import it. just a graphic of text on black.
