Panasonic PV-GS180?

So, I have never bought a mini-DV cam before. But I've got a script here, a real, classic-horror/slasher flick based in the 90's. I want a camera that will give me the look and feel of an old school 70's/80's flick.

If I can't get the look I want, it's fine. My question is, is the Panasonic PV-GS180 worth the price? I want my first film to have a decent look to it, no 'Kodak cam from wal-mart" BS.

So, is it worth it? And will I be satisfied. I'm already knowledgeable about editing/directing/etc.

Welcome to indietalk!

First: the camera isn't going to give you the look you want.
You will need the skill, experience and talent to get a specific
look for your movie. Knowledge of lighting, color correction,
filters, gels and even post production will go MUSH farther in
getting that look than which camera you buy. The very distinct
look of the films of the 70's/80's was the film stock used.

The good news is, you can get pretty close with skill, experience
and talent.

The bad news is the camera won't really get you there on its
own.

Second, the Panasonic PV-GS180 lacks one of the most important
features needed in a camera used to make movies. It has no mic
input. It does have manual control for the iris, shutter, white
balance and focus, though there is no focus ring. You focus with
a joy stick - making focusing on the fly difficult.

So basically, I just need the right accessories as far as look goes? Hm... alrighty then.

I assumed I could use some sort of editing software to adjust the specs. I'm clueless when it comes to stock/negative print.

Not at all. You will need experience, knowledge and some
talent for the look you want. The accessories are simply
tools. Tools in an inexperienced hand don't do much.

So get yourself a camera that has the three basics
and start gaining the knowledge and experience. You're
going to have a blast!
