watch Chronicles of Nerm Demo Footage

Nerm06csmall.jpg

Here are some finished shots from my upcoming film I've been working on for a few years now, 'The Chronicles of Nerm. For the past several years, I've been creating the sets (six) and characters (twelve) for the film, and after getting all of my audio recorded, I've been animating the ten minute film! Obviously this is not the finished film, I have probably a year and a half left on this film before it is finished. But these are finished shots from the film. This is a one-person project.

I feel incredibly lucky to have the amazing voice cast that signed onto my film, it's been an absolute dream come true:

Nerm: Alex Mentzel - You can see Alex in 'Feast of Love' where he plays Greg Kinnear's nephew as well as in many advertisements and plays.

Targ: Marc Graue - Marc owns a famous recording studio in LA. You can see him on VH1s 'Free Radio' and his voice in cartoons and games like World of Warcraft.

Ky: Zoe Bell - Famed stuntwoman-turned actor Zoe Bell played a lead in Quinten Tarantino's 'Death Proof' (Grindhouse) and ABCs Lost.

The Guard: Shelly Lipkin - Shelly has been on numerous TV shows and films over the years, including Laverne and Shirley, Lois and Clark and The Fugitive.

Keena: Mylisha Hood - This is Mylisha's first acting work, and she did a fantastic job!

Great work there. I am surprised no one has commented on it.

It is at Pixars level. This is both a compliment to you, and a push for better. I have never believed that Pixar was great at animation. Their base in computers has been blatant movie after movie. They have few if any animators who are traditionally trained. A basis in traditional animation is worth a lot. 100 years of animators passing tips and tricks to the next generation gives you a lot to work with.

Whether you know it or not (i don't know what sort of training you have, if you have then you have ignored much of it for this animation short) but you have used a couple of animation techniques subtlety. Notably anticipation and drag & flow (inertia). It would be nice to see someone push further and make use of all the traditional techniques in 3D... but all in all, please view this as nit picking. I am a very tough task master, and I criticize far more often than I praise, so comparing you to Pixar is high praise indeed... I have criticized Pixars work far more in the past (Toy Story was not even animation, it was motion capture... and if it was not motion capture, it was the worst animation in history).

Keep going at this. You probably don't meed anyone to tell you that you are good at it, but compliments and constructive criticism always help.

Excellent work there. It looks extremely good. Clearly you're a CG wiz...nice all around. I'd really like to see this.

Thank you everyone for the comments. This definetely has been a long time in the making, but I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Still have much to do, but it's finally getting there!

I'm pushing my animation skills as much as I can, but animation is not something I've really done before. But I'm learning fast and getting better with every shot that I do!
