View Full Version : What They Don't know
Wankersmurf 04-10-2009, 07:43 PM Hey Guys!
I'm sorta new to this, but i thought i would start by putting up one of my shorts.
This film got into a number of festivals but never really got to the place i wanted it to get. I have a feeling people just thought it was too violent. I would love to know your thoughts.
Thanx and look forward to hearing from you

Zensteve 04-10-2009, 08:49 PM That was really well done.

What place is that?
indietalk 04-10-2009, 08:59 PM What place is that?
To be a miiiiiiiilllllliiiiiioooonnnaaaaaaiiiirrrrreeee!
Wankersmurf 04-11-2009, 01:02 AM Well, i guess to get an agent and hopefully access to bigger and better things. I worry that people only see the violence in it and that they don't see the craft or story telling.
Thats why i thought it would be good to show it here.
Any thoughts?
ussinners 04-11-2009, 02:10 AM That was excellent, especially the acting. What camera did you use?
kgasser2 04-11-2009, 03:19 AM ha ok, so exactly how new are you? that was good stuff. i'm working on my first big project right now, hope it turns out that well.
Wankersmurf 04-11-2009, 03:31 AM It was shot on 16mm arriflex. Not sure the exact model. I could find out if you are desperate to know.
And i have directed a couple of music video and small commercial work.
ussinners 04-11-2009, 11:01 AM Well you did an excellent job. Everything, and everyone looked and sounded great. And I don't really need to know anything more about the camera. It just had such a great look.
Wankersmurf 04-12-2009, 01:38 AM Thank you. thank you.
Any thoughts on why festivals weren't into it? I was in a few but the majority didn't seem to like it.
I appreciate the input.
ussinners 04-12-2009, 01:44 AM Festivals suck. But, that's just my opinion. Just remember this, your movie is seen by one person who has to judge whether it makes the grade. Many of those people are morons.
There's plenty of discussions over in the festivals section about why some movies are chosen and others that are superior aren't. One of the main reasons is a "name" actor in a production. Though I'm not sure if that applies to shorts.
From a personal stand-point, this is a very good movie. I'd have run it if I was a festival operator.
M1chae1 04-13-2009, 03:48 PM As I stated on your other post about the short...I loved it. It's a wonderfully powerful short that is technically slick on all accounts.
Wankersmurf 04-13-2009, 07:54 PM Thanx again M1chae1.
I moved it over to the festival section cause that was what i was trying to find out about.
Cheers for your input
spankydoesfilm 04-13-2009, 09:42 PM WOW. Simply amazing work!
rcnineteen 04-14-2009, 12:10 PM That was impressive wankersmurf. How new are you? Are you self-taught or do you have any schooling in the art of filmmaking? Just curious. Anyway, I stand impressed and hope to get that good. It's too bad this forum wasn't better laid out in terms of what everyone is using (ie. software, computer, camera etc...)
Alcove Audio 04-14-2009, 12:53 PM Bravo!

Thank you, rcnineteen, really nice of you to say.
Yes i am "self-taught" to a large extent. I started out as a runner on commercials and have worked my way up to directing. I did a communications degree in film theory but it didn't have have any practical training. This is the second short film i have made. The first never saw the light of day because, to be honest, i hated it - but it did get me into music video and commercial directing.
Over in screening room forum we are talking about what gets into festivals. Not sure if anyone else is interested but some of the guys work at festivals and are giving their thoughts on what does and doesn't get in. Pretty interesting.
spankydoesfilm 04-18-2009, 10:14 AM I sent you a PM about a dvd

Has it turned up?
GetIcedPro 05-12-2009, 12:19 AM Oh wow man that was awesome. Great storytelling, pacing, and the ending was great too. I don't see why festivals would turn this down, I thought it was all around great.

Thanx, brother.
MavenFilmStudio 07-02-2009, 04:51 AM i dunno if your allowed to swear on this forum but that was f*cking amazing!
nice acting, great look, great music, great sound effects, great narrative, great angles and great lighting. Very brutal and very heart warming.
John@Bophe 07-02-2009, 06:46 AM This is a great example of how to make a captivating short film. The shots all looked well- planned, and the acting was top-notch. Excellent.
MrRiddz 07-14-2009, 08:01 PM Wow, excellent short film.
CDCosta 07-14-2009, 08:20 PM Anyway, I stand impressed and hope to get that good. It's too bad this forum wasn't better laid out in terms of what everyone is using (ie. software, computer, camera etc...)
Because a lot of people don't use the same camera/set up/computer/software for each shoot.
Depending on the shoot, the DP, the editor, it all varies.
Wankersmurf 08-18-2009, 09:34 AM Thanx guys. Really appreciate the support. Cheers.
fionaman 09-28-2009, 11:26 AM This is a truly great short film. The acting, directing, cinematography, and especially the narration - those last few words combined with the visuals made me tear up.
I swear I've seen the actress who plays the "love of his life" in other films.
M1chae1 09-28-2009, 02:07 PM God damn. I watched that for the third time...that's how impressed I am with it. It's so touching and powerful. So well shot.
I'd very much like to work with the director in the future. It would be an honor.
What is the best way to keep informed of future auditions and projects? All I ask for is a plane ticket and a couch. :) Please review my Myspace for clips and reels of my work: www.myspace.com/m1chaelreed if you feel like giving a stranger a moment of your time (as I did you). Doh! The guild trip. I'm only teasing. I know...I'm a self promoting bastard.
Thanks again. Stunning job. And you can tell your actors (especially the lead) that he rocks my socks off. I'm completely impressed.
