What would you like to know about R2 films?

They acquire movies just like any other distributor. In most cases
they do not pay anything up front. You can click on this link to
see their current catalogue. I have never heard anything bad about
them - they seem to pay out correctly. In September they became
partners with OnmiVid to provide content. They are based out of
Reno, NV I think. I met one of their reps (name escapes me at the
moment) at AFI in November.

If you have a project that you think fits their criteria, it’s
worth submitting it.

DeJager, do you have personal experience with them?

I was reading this article (http://filmmakeriq.com/2010/09/the-truth-on-how-hollywood-makes-money-can-indies-films-survive/) on how hard it was to get a profitable movie out, because the Big Six studios were also distributors, and, to cover overhead, they had to distribute mainly blockbusters. That didn't seem the whole story, and I understand that the film markets have lots of other smaller distributors. Hence my interest.

Where am I going to get the capital???

leapinglizards, you have been bumping old threads - many over
two and three years old - that are about distribution. Here is the
pretty much the answer to all of your questions: It is always worth
submitting your finished film to a distributor. In todays market you
can almost count on not getting any money up front. Not always
true so submit your film and ask about what they offer. Click on
the link on the threads and look at what the distributor is selling.
Then contact them. They can answer all your questions.

It's important that you have a finished film. Distributors usually
don't want to play the "when I make my movie..." game so have
a finished product.

Do you have a finished film?

Aspiring Mogul, there are many distributors out there distributing
independent films. You do not need to go through the majors. Check
out the 2012 AFM Exhibitor List, pick up a copy of the Hollywood
Distribution Directory. These will not tell you where to find the money
to make a movie, but it will give you a better understanding of how
many distributors are out there. They are ALL looking for movies.

Yeah, I think the article I referenced was a bit off.

Who needs a traditional distributor in this Internet age?

directorik

I do.

You see, I am a writer and director and sometimes producer.
Every hour I spend working as a distributor I am not working
as a writer or director. I have no interest at all in doing what
it takes to distribute my movies. I let a distributor do that.

In other forums I belong to this is encouraged. But I now take it that it is not here and will avoid it.

I am sorry - but could you please clarify this statement? I don't understand it.

I have done so. But I don't trust them to tell me their reputation and status in the industry...it is helpful to hear from other film-makers. And I've done a lot of web researching and haven't found general reputations of distributors. Can you please point me to any?

Do you have a finished film?

Yes

How long does it take to set up and account with Amazon Advantage, Create Space, FilmBaby (NetFlix) and/or Tunecore (iTunes)? Not long enough to justify giving way 25% of my profits.

You misunderstood. I was stating fact - not making a judgment.
Bump all you want.

Most distributors do not pay any money up front, they pay a percentage
of sales.

Fair enough. I'm sorry I made any general assumptions you didn't like.
Won't happen again.
