wide angle lenses

All that I know about a wide angle lense is that it is used in small areas such as bedrooms. What is the primary use for these lenses? What types of situations? When would I see them in movies?

Often times, which mostly goes unnoticed as it just blends in with the movie, people will throw on a wide angle lens for close-up shots to give a feeling of disorientation or dreamlike quality to it.

Another great use for a wide angle can be in a car, if you're sitting in the back seat and want to get the two people in the front and the seats. Any cramped quarters it can come in really handy.

The use of a wide angle lens really is your imagination. Aside from utilizing it in it's obvious capacity for close-quarters, you could try using it on different shots, see what kind of 'feel' you get from the shot when using it, as opposed to non-wide.

It's used for the master shot. When you shoot, you always shoot a master, which is the entire scene with a wide angle. Then, you go in for the closer shots. This gives the editor something to work with. He has an entire scene to start cutting into, instead of having nothing to start with (and it guarantees there won't be something missing). It's also used for, well, when you want to use a wide angle to show something. It's up to you! A DP is an artist, the camera/lens is his brush, the film/video is his canvas.
