CANON GL1 - Just got and need tips

Hey. Recently got a Canon Gl1 package after discussions on this board and it perfectly suited my budget and production needs! Couple of questions for any GL users who can talk from personal experience.
1. I'm shooting a doc and want to use lavaliers. GL1 only has sterio mic input. Are the simple lavaliers with stero input sufficient or is it best to get the xlr adapter and hook up lavaliers to that.

2. If I go the XLR adapter route any recommendations? beachteck over Studio 1? wireless over wire? I've heard of problems when using wireless.

3. What is the best way to transfer the video to my pc? i will be using microsoft movie maker. The firewire cable that came with package is for mac. I went to store and was told two different things, to order suitable firewire cable on line, but I can't find anything that matches inputs --or to get external drive with suitable connector. Any advice?

Thanks!

XLR is a great way to go, but if you are on a budget you can just use the 1/8th jack and a mixing board. I think a mixing board is more important than the type of Jack you use. You can go to any Guitar center and pick up a little Behringer 6 channel for about 50bucks new. I use this set up for Video Depositions an Seminar work...It should work well with documentaries. here's my Equipment for sound like you want.

Audio Technica: ATR 700 Lav Mic UHF (The one below isn't the one I use, It's a little more Expencive..I payed 200 for mine.)

Behringer: Eurotrack MX 602 MA (mines a 6 channel)

Alesis: 3630 Compressor/Gate (when I use a room mic and it has a lot of echo)

All of this sound Equipment will cost you less than 500.00 and you can make it sound VERY good.

I don't understand your problem with the Firewire. They sell several cheap Firewire cards that will work with your GL1. I use a Dynex DXFC103

I hope this Helps you. My GL1 sounds and looks Fantastic and I wouldn't change anything. Even if you get the XLR mout, You still should see about getting a mixing board. It makes a lot of difference in control and sound quality.
