Hello, hello. On the business/legal side of the fence can I just slap on my own (unique) company name and logo to my final product without having to register it? Or would regsitering a trademark/logo be one of the first things to do? If so, any pointers as to the most affordable way of going about the registration process? Thanks.

Using it is the best thing you can do, if you are sure it is trademark free (www.uspto.gov). You can't trademark something unless you have been using it for at least six months, so use it now.
It's called a trademark, or servicemark, so you have to be actively in business offering a product or service. If you are, you will be able to prove it. If you are approved, then you can use the ® instead of the TM or SM. Anyone can use the TM or SM.
