where to distribute???

Ok, this may be a bit odd, but....

I'm still living in Colombia and am in post of my feature film shot down here (miniDV). Soon I'll be moving back to NYC. I made this film because I have a few other scripts that I'd like to sell/shoot. I figured if I had a film finished already, then people might take my scripts a bit more seriously. The film is in Spanish, but I will have it subtitled. What I'm wondering now is should I try for distribution in the States (preferred) or shoud I look for distribution here in Colombia first?

Subtitled films have a very difficult time here in the States. You should
do several things at the same time:

Research distributors based in the States that specialize in foreign language
movies and contact them.

Contact more local distributors - Central and South America.

Contact European and Asian distributors. The market for subtitled film in
Europe and Asia is much bigger then in the States.

Enter film festivals with your finished movie.

Thanks, more or less what I had in mind. The killer is is that there's quite a bit of buzz about this film down here, and with Colombia putting out less than 20 a year, well, it will be in the top 20. If I could stay, I'd get a lot more play here, but I have to move back to NYC again - where everyone is a writer or actor....
