View Full Version : Digital Effects
haywirfilms 12-02-2007, 08:50 PM Hey everyone, I'm Hayden Campain. I've been into digital FX and video editing for a few years now. And I was considering starting up a digital FX company and providing cheap special FX to indie filmmakers. How do you think that would do? Do you think I would get any business? Would you be interested in it? Give me some feedback.
Thunderclap 12-02-2007, 08:57 PM I myself may be interested depending on cost and quality of the work. If you post some samples I'm sure you'd get some serious inquiries.
haywirfilms 12-02-2007, 09:03 PM Ok! I am actually working on a video right now. I should have it up by tomorrow. Some of the effects I do are muzzle flashes, lightsaber effects, explosions, gore effects, and various other stuff. I mainly use adobe after effects and final cut pro. As far as pricing. Im not going to charge much. Probably something like 10 bucks an hour.
haywirfilms 12-03-2007, 06:52 AM So, Is anyone else interested? I mainly want to know if I would get any business if I started this.
knightly 12-03-2007, 12:35 PM Marketed correctly, I think it would be a valuable asset to the community. As far as I know, there's only one other company actually doing this stuff at the indie price point.
Will Vincent 12-03-2007, 02:43 PM I'm in the process of getting my company rolling on this too.. though my service list will be a bit different.
From a business standpoint, $10/hour doesn't inspire much confidence in quality work..
haywirfilms 12-03-2007, 03:09 PM Well, I just gave 10 dollars an hour because I had no clue how much to charge. This is just my opinion but I am fairly confident in my effects being decent quality. Maybe not exactly hollywood quality but pretty decent. Theres a few things I want to know from you guys though.
1. What do you think would be a good price to charge
2. Would you be interested in this service?
3.What do you think would be a good place to market this?
4. What type or quality of effects would you expect?
Will Vincent 12-03-2007, 03:31 PM I don't think you can really do a general hourly fee, as all jobs will be different. So pricing should be based more on the work involved than the time involved. Another problem with hourly rates is that there is generally no way for the client to know whether or not they're getting screwed on the number of hours they're being charged for.
I didn't mean imply that your effects weren't good.. But, if given the choice between a company charging $10/hour or one charging 5-10 times that, the more expensive one "feels" like it is worthwhile. It's difficult to explain if you don't understand what I mean already.. ;)
I'll politely decline the remainder of the questions, as technically we're competition. ;)
haywirfilms 12-03-2007, 07:52 PM I'll politely decline the remainder of the questions, as technically we're competition.
What kind of stuff are you doing exactly?
Will Vincent 12-04-2007, 12:17 AM I haven't made any official announcement yet, so I'd rather not say. ;)
knightly 12-04-2007, 02:08 AM The $10/hr or some flat rate equivalent on a per project basis though sould let you market to lower budget indies who wouldn't normally be able to hire someone to do effects...so it would pretty much be an untapped market. Most of the folks who will be doing this (including Will I'm assuming as I've seen his work and like it-and it's worked well for us) would be targeting larger budgeted indie films that can afford that level of work...experience will also let you ramp up your fees as you gain it.
haywirfilms 12-07-2007, 05:51 PM Here, I just posted a sample video. these are a few of the effects I can do.
